W. Oahu, Waikiki win

Mark Hallberg's two-run double broke a 2-2 tie and ignited a six-run 10th inning that lifted the West Oahu CaneFires over the North Shore Honu, 8-2, yesterday in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.

Caleb Gindl also had two RBIs in the 10th, and Kyle Peter batted 4 for 5 for the CaneFires (12-10).

Matt McBride hit a solo homer in the sixth and Kyle Martin hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth for the Honu (8-14).

Starting pitchers Chris Cody (West Oahu) and Jose Capellan (North Shore) each pitched five scoreless innings and allowed two hits. Cody struck out four and Capellan struck out three.

In the late game, James McOwen and Buster Posey each had two hits and three RBIs as the Waikiki BeachBoys beat the Honolulu Sharks, 13-9.

Alfredo Silverio had three hits, and Tony Thomas Jr. and Todd Frazier each had two RBIs for the BeachBoys (11-11), who took advantage of 13 walks, including four with the bases loaded. Frazier hit a solo homer.

Dominic Brown had two hits and two RBIs, Michael Taylor drove in two runs and Bradley Emaus hit a solo homer for the Sharks (13-9).

LETRO LEADS HILO

Adele Letro scored three goals as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated host Chaminade, 5-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's match at Saint Louis field.

Letro now owns the school season scoring record with 14 goals. The conference-leading Vulcans improved to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in the PacWest.

Ona Byers had three shots on goal for Chaminade (1-11, 0-8).

Elsewhere in the PacWest yesterday:

  • Dustin Daley scored two goals as visiting Hilo (8-4-2, 3-3-2) beat Chaminade (1-14-1, 0-8) in a men's match. Garrett Barker scored for Chaminade.

  • Chance Bukoski scored on a header in the 89th minute, lifting Hawai'i Pacific (8-5-1, 6-2) to a 2-1 victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i (4-9-2, 2-4-2) in a men's match at BYUH field. Adam Maciejewski scored for BYUH.

  • Natalie Cude scored in the third minute as host BYUH (10-4, 6-2) rolled to a 5-1 victory over HPU (3-12, 1-7) in a women's match. Caitlyn McNeely scored for HPU.


    VOLLEYBALL

    CHAMINADE PREVAILS

    Trina Kauliakamoa had 14 kills and 10 digs as Chaminade beat Academy of Art (Calif.), 24-26, 25-21, 25-19, 25-16, last night in a non-conference match at McCabe Gym.

    Samantha Miller added 12 kills and Pisila Tukia 11 for the Silverswords (10-13).

    Dan Yang led AAU (16-8) with 18 kills.
