Megan Tinnin scored 14 points and Dita Liepkalne added 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists as the Rainbow Wahine basketball team defeated Division II Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 66-60, in an exhibition game last night at Stan Sheriff Center.

The matchup served as the debut for the Rainbow Wahine's heralded 2008 recruiting class, which includes projected starter Rebecca Dew, Sarah Ilich, Briauna Linton, Breanna Arbuckle and Jennifer Hamilton, and for Katie Wilson, who sat out last year with an injury, and Allie Patterson, a transfer from St. John's.

"This was just a tool for us to measure where we are," said head coach Jim Bolla. "We got everybody in and did some things OK. We were able to get our young people into a game atmosphere and go through game-day preparations."

The Rainbow Wahine took control early in the first half with a 10-0 run capped by a layup by Tinnin off an assist from Keisha Kanekoa. They took their biggest lead of the half, 24-9, when Tinnin converted a pair of free throws then nailed a 3-pointer on the next UH possession.

But it was how the Rainbow Wahine scored that was a clear indicator of the extent to which this year's squad has bought into Bolla's system. Twelve of the team's 13 first-half baskets came off assists.

BYUH went on a brief run behind the bullish interior play of Latoya Wily, who repeatedly powered her way to the basket for up-and-under layups despite facing a big UH front line that included the 6-foot-2 Ilich and 6-3 Dew. But the Rainbow Wahine responded with deft interior passing and fast-break baskets.

Hawai'i was also able to push the pace in the half, outrebounding the Seasiders 21-13 and pressuring them into 11 turnovers.

After a shaky start in which she turned the ball over five times, Ilich made a strong case for playing time with eight points, 10 rebounds two assists, a block and steal in 22 minutes.

The Rainbow Wahine led comfortably throughout a foul-snarled second half that was not as close as the score indicated.

Bolla played each of the 12 players who suited up for the game, including Linton, Arbuckle and Hamilton, who each arrived midway through the first half after attending a meeting with their study group.

Sophomore guard Leilani Galdones, who sat out of practice this week after re-tearing her left meniscus, did not dress.

"Obviously we didn't play nearly as well as we could but I think we'll be a quick team this year," said Tinnin, who was named co-captain along with Kanekoa. "We run the court really well and with our new girls, we'll be faster up and down the court than we have been in years. I mean, Rebecca Dew, 6-3, can run faster than a lot of our guards. That's going to help us a lot in the future."
