WAIPI'O — Running in their packs helped 'Iolani and Punahou to yesterday's Interscholastic League of Honolulu cross country team titles.

'Iolani placed five boys in the top 10 to win the boys title with 32 points, while Punahou placed six girls in the top 16 to win with 49 points.

Hawai'i Baptist senior Matthew Nakamoto won the individual title for the second straight year, finishing the 3-mile course at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park in 16:45.95. Pac-Five senior Haley Abing, who attends La Pietra, repeated as the girls winner with a 3-mile time of 19:46.12.

"We practice running in a really tight group," said 'Iolani's Tyler Mulloy, a senior captain. "We all wanted this."

Nakamoto built a lead from the beginning, but 'Iolani's pack settled right behind. There were five 'Iolani runners trailing Nakamoto through the first mile. Runners from Kamehameha and Punahou started to break up the pack at the second mile, but 'Iolani still remained solid down the stretch.

Freshman Troy Esaki finished second in 17:31.28, with Raider teammates Mulloy third in 17:38.18, Borys Pleskacz eighth in 17:53.30, Justin Higa ninth in 18:03.18 and Andrew Ellison 10th in 18:12.54.

"We just had to get it done as a team," Esaki said.

Meanwhile, in the four races he's won this season, Nakamoto has done so with comfortable margins and with his own strategy.

"I give myself a time I want to hit," he said. "Instead of going all out, I try to hit a target for each mile time."

The girls race started with a pack of six runners through the first mile, before Pac-Five's Abing and Julie Besenbruch, the 2006 state champion, separated themselves. Abing slowly pulled away and won, while Besenbruch was second in 19:53.19.

"We were pushing each other," Abing said. "That's how we practice and that's how we run."

Punahou's second through sixth runners were running together through one part of the race and that pack aspect helped the Buffanblu, the three-time state champion, come out on top.

"We've been using each other, trying to stay in a pack as much as we can," said Punahou sophomore Julia Brand, who finished fifth in 20:38.87.

"We encourage each other when someone falls behind. We work as a team and work together. That's what cross country is all about, having everyone come in as fast as they can."

Punahou's Kyleigh Mann finished eighth in 20:51.12, followed by teammates Farrah Madanay (10th, 21:03.59), Brooke Laporte (11th, 21:05.42), Courtney Choy (15th, 21:28.23), and Kacie Won (16th, 21:30.34).

Pac-Five finished second with 60 points and Kamehameha, which has had strong showings all season, was third with 64.
