Running: Radcliffe tunes up for NYC Marathon with victory

PORTSMOUTH, England — One week before defending her New York City Marathon title, Paula Radcliffe shrugged off her Olympic disappointment by setting a record in the Great South Run on Sunday.
A disappointing 23rd in the Beijing marathon in August, Radcliffe finished the flat, 10-mile road course in a British record of 51 minutes, 11 seconds in her first race since the Olympics.
The 34-year-old marathon world record holder showed no effects of the stress fracture to her left hip and the calf injuries that ruined her preparations for Beijing. Winner of seven of the eight marathons she has completed, the Briton will go for her third NYC Marathon victory next Sunday.
Kenya's Bernard Kipyego won the men's race in 46:42, well ahead of Ireland's Martin Fagan and defending champion Luke Kibet.
