Nevada's Silva-Purcell ready for homecoming

Nevada sophomore linebacker Jared Silva-Purcell, a 2006 graduate of Saint Louis, put the icing on the cake in Saturday's 44-17 win over Utah State.

Silva-Purcell, who is 5 feet 11 and 220 pounds, intercepted a pass on a third-and-6 situation late in the fourth quarter and returned it 47 yards for the game's final score as the Wolf Pack improved to 4-3, 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Sophomore defensive lineman Mike Andrews, a 2006 graduate of Kalaheo, is also on the Nevada roster.

Silva-Purcell, who was named Interscholastic League of Honolulu Defensive Player of the Year and won the state wrestling title at 215 pounds as a senior, is the cousin of Hawai'i defensive lineman Elliott Purcell and former Warriors Melila and Amani Purcell.

Nevada meets Hawai'i Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:05 p.m.

  • Oregon State senior safety Al Afalava (Kahuku '05 of La'ie) recorded four tackles, including one for a 3-yard loss, deflected a pass and intercepted a pass in a 34-13 win over Washington Saturday. Senior defensive end Daniel Te'o-Nesheim (Hawai'i Prep '04 of Waikoloa) was in on four tackles.

  • USC senior linebacker Kaluka Maiava (Baldwin '04 of Wailuku) made four tackles, including one for a 2-yard loss, in Saturday's 69-0 rout of Washington State.

  • Utah sophomore linebacker Nai Fotu (Kahuku '07 of La'ie) made five tackles, including a sack for a loss of 12 yards, and broke up a pass in Saturday's 49-16 win over Colorado State.

  • UNLV sophomore defensive tackle Malo Taumua ('Aiea '05 of Honolulu) had four tackles, including 1 1/2 for losses, in Saturday's 29-28 loss to Air Force.

  • Idaho freshman running back Kama Bailey (Damien '08 of Honolulu) accounted for both Vandals' touchdowns in Saturday's 46-14 loss at Louisiana Tech. He caught a 33-yard TD pass — his first collegiate score — in the first quarter and a 27-yarder in the second quarter. Bailey also returned six kickoffs for 104 yards (17.3 yards per return). Sophomore linebacker JoJo Dickson (Baldwin '07 of Wailuku) had eight tackles and freshman linebacker Robert Siavi'i (Leilehua '08 of Wahiawa) was in on three stops.

  • Weber State sophomore quarterback Cameron Higgins (Saint Louis '06 of Hawai'i Kai) completed 27 of 37 passes for 413 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 14-7 win over Northern Colorado. Junior wide receiver Cody Nakamura (Baldwin '05 of Wailuku) had seven receptions for 93 yards, including a 27-yard TD pass in the third quarter.

  • Montana Western freshman quarterback Micah Mamiya (Saint Louis '08 of Honolulu) completed 31 of his 40 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-17 loss to Montana Tech Saturday. Mamiya also had six rushes for 29 yards. Freshman wide receiver Martin Iosefo (Leilehua '08 of Wahiawa) caught two passes for 15 yards and junior running back Kekoa Perbera (Mililani '06) had one reception for two yards. Sophomore safety Scott Keiter-Charles (Castle '07 of Kane'ohe) had a team-high 10 tackles.

  • Western Oregon junior wide receiver Shaun Kauleinamoku (Saint Louis '05 of 'Ewa Beach) had a team-high six receptions for 110 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown catch on the first play of the fourth quarter, in Saturday's 42-35 win over Dixie State.

  • Mt. San Antonio College freshman defensive back Kenneth Kamauoha (Kaiser '08 of Waimanalo) had three tackles and an interception in Saturday's 57-7 win over Riverside. Freshman defensive back Manoa Latu (Saint Louis '08 of Kapahulu) also had a pick, sophomore defensive lineman Justin Hunt ('Aiea '07) had two tackles and freshman wide receiver Thomas "Kamaki" Sherman ('Anuenue '08 of Pearl City) caught one pass for 13 yards.

    WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • Pepperdine sophomore setter Kealohilani Kea (Kamehameha '07 of Honolulu) came off the bench for 22 assists, five digs, four kills and a block in a four-set win over Gonzaga Thursday. In her second career start Saturday, Kea recorded 57 assists, seven digs, five kills and an ace to lead the Waves to a five-set win over Portland. Pepperdine (16-1, 4-1 West Coast Conference) moved up one spot to 15th in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll.

  • Washington junior libero Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani '05 of Kane'ohe) had 29 digs and three assists in a five-set win over Oregon Friday and 24 digs with two assists in Sunday's sweep of Oregon State. Junior setter Camilla Ah-Hoy (Kahuku '06 of La'ie) had 34 assists, four digs and two kills for Oregon State. In a four-set win Friday at Washington State, Ah-Hoy went for 61 assists, eight digs, four blocks and an ace.

  • South Dakota State sophomore setter Melia Iwamoto (Kalani '07 of Honolulu) had 30 assists, eight digs, two blocks, one ace and a kill in a sweep of Centenary Friday. In a sweep of Missouri-Kansas City Saturday, Iwamoto had 38 assists, six digs, five kills, three blocks and two aces. Iwamoto had 57 assists, 13 digs, three aces, two kills and a block in Monday's five-set win over Drake.

  • Long Beach State freshman outside hitter Lauren Minkel ('Iolani '08 of Honolulu) had six digs and a kill in a four-set loss to UC Irvine Thursday. She recorded five digs and an assist in a Friday sweep of UC Riverside.

  • St. Mary's (Calif.) sophomore setter Kapua Kamana'o ('Iolani '07 of Honolulu) recorded 60 assists, 11 digs, four blocks, three kills and two aces in a five-set loss to San Francisco Thursday. Junior middle blocker Megan Burton ('Iolani '06 of Kapolei) put down 13 kills with 10 blocks and a dig and freshman outside hitter Chanteal Satele (Word of Life '08 of Mililani) added five kills, three blocks and a dig. Freshman outside hitter Leinani Keanini ('Iolani '08 of Honolulu) appeared in three games and had one dig for USF. In a four-set loss to San Diego Saturday, Satele had a team-high 13 kills with four digs and two blocks. Kamana'o recorded 35 assists, five digs and two blocks and Burton added two kills and three blocks.

  • San Jose State sophomore outside hitter Brianna Amian (Moanalua '07 of Honolulu) had a team-high 14 kills with 10 digs, two blocks, two assists and six aces in a four-set win over Cal State Bakersfield. Junior libero Kristal Tsukano (Kamehameha '06 of Honolulu) dug a team-high 14 balls with two assists, one kill and an ace.

  • Siena junior Kau'i Robello (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) had 10 kills, 10 digs, two blocks and an ace in a four-set win over Iona Saturday. In a five-set win over Manhattan Sunday, Robello had four kills, eight digs, six assists, one ace and was in on a block.

  • St. John's senior libero Lena Yee (Moanalua '05 of Honolulu) had 12 digs and two assists in a five-set win over Connecticut Saturday.

  • Colgate sophomore outside hitter Logan Keala (Kamehameha '07 of Kane'ohe) had nine kills, eight digs, one assist and was in on a block in a sweep of Navy Friday. In Saturday's three-set loss to American, Keala had seven kills with five digs, one ace and an assist.

  • Fairfield (Conn.) senior defensive specialist Brandi Higa (Hawai'i Baptist '04 of Honolulu) had 16 digs, three aces and two assists in a sweep of Saint Peter's Saturday. Freshman Haililani Pokipala (Sacred Hearts '08 of Honolulu) added eight digs. In Sunday's four-set loss at Iona, Higa had 22 digs, an ace and an assist and Pokipala had five digs and two aces.

  • Regis freshman defensive specialist Cassidee Young (Kamehameha '08 of Pearl City) had a match-high 21 digs, two assists and a kill in a three-set loss at Western New Mexico Friday. Young had 10 digs and an ace in Saturday's four-set win over New Mexico Highlands.

  • Pacific (Ore.) freshman middle blocker Kelsy Takashima (Moloka'i '08 of Kaunakakai) had 17 kills in a five-set loss to George Fox last Wednesday. In a four-set loss to Puget Sound Friday, Takashima had 11 kills and five blocks and freshman Mari Kondo (Mid-Pacific '08 of 'Ewa Beach) added 25 digs.

  • Linfield freshman Samantha Lau (Saint Francis '08 of Kailua) had 12 kills and 22 digs in a four-set loss to Pacific Lutheran Friday.

    CROSS COUNTRY

  • At Saturday's Bronco Invitational, Pepperdine sophomore Chelsea Wishard (Kaua'i '07 of Lawa'i) finished 15th out of 143 runners with a 5K time of 17:54. Pepperdine finished eighth out of 17 teams in the invitational division with 162 points. In the open men's race, sophomore Kenji Kadowaki (Punahou '07 of Honolulu) of host Santa Clara placed 37th out of 64 runners with an 8K time of 28:57. Cal State East Bay freshman Dillon Soldwisch (Lahainaluna '08) placed 52nd in 31:24. Santa Clara placed third out of nine teams with 73 points and East Bay finished sixth with 148.

  • Davidson senior Emily King (Moanalua '05 of Honolulu) finished 49th out of 194 runners at Friday's Blue Ridge Open with a 5K time of 19:24. The Wildcats placed fifth out of 26 teams with 173 points.

  • Illinois Tech sophomore Kevin Acacio (Waipahu '07 of Waipahu) finished 415th out of 494 runners at Saturday's Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational with an 8K time of 28:59.77. Illinois Tech placed 23rd out of 32 teams with 728 points.

  • Casey Nishimura (Mid-Pacific '07 of Hawai'i Kai) of Pacific (Ore.) finished 72nd out of 87 runners at Saturday's Lewis & Clark Pioneer Open with an 8K time of 30:45. Teammate Blake Picadura (Kamehameha '08 of Kailua) finished 74th in 30:51. The Boxers finished eighth out of nine teams with 212 points.

  • Eastern Oregon freshman Keilani Wasson (Kahuku '08 of La'ie) placed 17th out of 22 runners at Saturday's Eastern Oregon Open with a 3K time of 12:52. Northwest Nazarene defeated Eastern Oregon, 23-35, in the tri-meet.

    GOLF

  • UCLA freshman Stephanie Kono (Punahou '08 of Honolulu) finished in a tie for ninth at The Stanford Intercollegiate, which concluded Sunday at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course. Kono opened with a 69 Friday, shot even par 71 Saturday and closed with a 72 to finish 1-under for the tournament. She was six strokes behind medalist Lizette Salas of USC. Stanford senior Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05 of Pearl City) finished in a tie for 14th after she shot 2-over 215. Arizona senior Amanda Wilson (Waiakea '04 of Hilo) shot 7-over 220 to finish in a tie for 38th.

    MEN'S WATER POLO

  • Harvard junior 2-meter player Egen Atkinson ('Iolani '06 of Honolulu) scored a goal in Saturday's 14-6 win over Queens.

    HONORS

  • Colorado School of Mines senior basketball player Kyle Pape ('Iolani '05 of Honolulu) was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason First Team. Pape, who averaged 20.7 points per game (ninth-best in Division II last year), started all 29 games and made 89 percent of his free throws as a junior (seventh in the nation).

  • Fairfield freshman Michelle Yoshida (Punahou '08 of Kane'ohe) was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's Swimmer of the Week. Yoshida won the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events and was a member of the winning 200-meter freestyle relay team two weeks ago. In Friday's win over St. Peter's, Yoshida broke the school-record in the 50-meter freestyle in 27.06 seconds.

  • Southern California sophomore setter Riley McKibbin (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) was named Most Valuable Player after leading the Trojans to a first-place finish at the Husky Energy Can-Am Challenge last weekend in Alberta, Canada. USC went 4-0, defeating Montreal, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Trinity Western. McKibbin had 37 assists against Saskatchewan. USC visits Hawai'i Nov. 7-8.
