HA'IKU
Update meetings on stream flow restoration

The state Commission on Water Resource Management will hold two meetings to update the community on its progress in implementing instream flow standards for five areas in East Maui.

The commission last month moved to set flow standards and is working with the U.S. Geological Survey, the Department of Land and Natural Resources' Division of Aquatic Resources and East Maui Irrigation Co. on restoring flow to streams in the coming weeks, said commission deputy director Ken Kawahara.

The commission is developing a plan to collect baseline stream information before water is released, document flow restoration efforts, monitor the stream after restoration, and establish a long-term monitoring program.

The first meeting, at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Ha'iku Community Center, will focus on implementing interim flow standards for Honopou, Hanehoi and Huelo streams.

A second meeting, at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at Ke'anae School, will focus on Palauhulu, Waiokamilo and Wailuanui streams.
