MILILANI — Fred Culp recovered a loose Kailua punt snap in the end zone and Taz Stevenson scored on two second-half touchdown runs last night to help Mililani hold off the visiting Surfriders, 21-12, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association playoff action at soggy John Kauinana Stadium.

The Trojans, the No. 4 seed in the OIA Red Conference Western Division, improved to 5-4 overall and advance to this week's quarterfinals at East champion Kahuku (7-1).

Mililani began the season 0-3 but has won five of its past six games.

"We have a lot of pieces together now and we're ready to give Kahuku a good fight," said Stevenson, a junior receiver.

East No. 5 Kailua's season ends at 2-6.

The Surfriders began the season 0-5 but four of the losses came by narrow margins and they came out strong last night, marching 65 yards in just six plays after the opening kickoff, culminating in Calen Friel's 2-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt failed, but Kailua led 6-0 less than three minutes into the game.

"They have a physical approach to football and they really came in here wanting to win," Mililani coach Darnell Arceneaux said. "All of their losses were close and they could have easily won the East. I dug up some tapes and watched their games, so we knew they were a very good football team."

The Surfriders held the Trojans without a first down through the first quarter and dodged a bullet when defensive lineman Kepu Tauatevalu knocked the ball loose from Mililani quarterback Matt Milton, who was heading to the end zone near the 5-yard line early in the second quarter.

Linebacker Rock Trueman recovered in the end zone for a touchback, but the Trojans got their own break four plays later when a low punt snap was mishandled and recovered in the end zone by Culp.

Corey Nakagawa's PAT gave Mililani a 7-6 lead with 6:47 remaining in the half.

"Even if (the punter) had caught the ball, I think we would have blocked it," Arceneaux said. "We take pride in our special teams and work hard on it. Sua (Manuma) punted well and gave us good field position the whole game. It was a total team effort."

The Trojans stretched the lead to 14-6 midway through the third quarter after Stevenson's 19-yard TD run on third-and-5, and Stevenson scored again with 2:43 left in the quarter on a 3-yard run that was set up by Veni Manu's fumble recovery on the Kailua 11.

It was one of several fumbles and slips by the Surfriders on the muddy field.

"It was a tough environment and we didn't manage it very well," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said. "(Mililani) had to play on it, too, but we just made too many crucial errors and turnovers."

EXTRA POINT: Kailua sophomore running back Isaac Sato, who was taken away by ambulance in the fourth quarter after landing on his head during a tackle, was moving his hands and legs and should be OK, Rosolowich said.
