Two-time defending Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I champion Saint Louis flexed its muscles in a 49-0 rout of upstart Word of Life last night at Aloha Stadium.

The second-ranked Crusaders scored all seven touchdowns in the first half to improve to 6-1, 4-1 in the ILH. Word of Life, in its first season as a varsity Division II team, fell to 2-7, 0-6.

"We still made a lot of mistakes that we'll have to go back and fix," Saint Louis coach John Hao said. "But I'm glad that all our kids got to play."

Saint Louis wasted little time, scoring in four plays on its opening drive. Jeremy Higgins had completions of 12 yards to Billy Stutzmann and 29 yards to Trevor Mau, setting up La'akea Frias' 15-yard touchdown run. Warren Spencer's extra point made it 7-0.

Higgins threw the first of his two TD passes on a 21-yarder to Mau, who finished with five catches for 80 yards, to make it 14-0 after the first quarter.

The Crusaders scored on each of their four offensive possessions in the second quarter.

Josh Tupua took his first carry of the game 35 yards to the end zone early in the quarter and, four plays later, Kalei Contrades returned a punt 44 yards for a touchdown.

Contrades, a sophomore defensive back, veered to the left sideline, turned the corner and went untouched to make it 28-0.

After a WOLA fumble on the very next play, the Crusaders punched it in two plays later on a 13-yard run by Jordan Fukumoto. Higgins faked a dive to running back Austin Wakinekona, before pitching to Fukumoto, who was lined up at left slotback.

Higgins extended the lead to 42-0 with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Micah McClinton. Following another WOLA fumble, backup quarterback Marcus Mariota added a 10-yard touchdown run before the half.

The entire second half was played with a running clock, due to the 35-point mercy rule.

Higgins, who played less than two full quarters, finished with 194 yards on 12-of-15 passing.

WOLA committed six turnovers, including four fumbles. Saint Louis held the Firebrands' rushing attack to 19 yards on 33 carries.

"Saint Louis has been the standard in the ILH for a long time," WOLA coach Joe Onosai said. "We're a young program and I think our kids were a little overwhelmed, but I told them it's part of the process and we're going to take our licks, but we just need to keep positive."

Hao said of the Firebrands: "They did as much as they could with what they have. They have some tough kids and they're going to get better."

KAMEHAMEHA 45, PAC-FIVE 7: The Warriors racked up 393 yards of total offense, led by Ryan Ho's 92 rushing yards and 38-yard touchdown run, to beat the Wolfpack at Aloha Stadium.

The Warriors, ranked fifth in The Advertiser's top 10 poll, improved to 6-3, 3-2 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. The Wolfpack fell to 3-6, 2-4.
