A 19-year-old man accused of stabbing to death a McCully woman and injuring her husband and toddler daughter in the attack appeared before a judge today.

Sato Franklin Sigrah, of North Judd Street, appeared before District Judge Philip Doi, who confirmed his $500,000 bail and set a preliminary hearing for Wednesday. Sigrah appeared wearing a white prison jump suit with his arms shackled behind him.

He is accused of killing Lyola Mesebeluu, 27, who died at The Queen's Medical Center at 6:10 a.m. Saturday after being stabbed repeatedly in the upper torso in a bedroom of a third-story apartment at 2222 Kapi'olani Blvd.

Sigrah was charged with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree murder, two counts of attempted second-degree murder and burglary.

As two sheriff's deputies held his client's arms, a lawyer from the public defender's office waived the reading of the charges and did not enter a plea.

Meanwhile, a memorial fund has been set up in the dead woman's name.

The fund, in the name of Lyola Yada Mesebeluu, has been opened at Bank of Hawaii, where she worked as a teller for a year at the company's Ala Moana branch.

Checks can be made out to The Lyola Mesebeluu Memorial Fund and dropped off at any Bank of Hawaii branch.

"This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Keith, Kiarra, and the Mesebeluu family," Danny Kim, senior vice president and East Oahu regional manager, said in a prepared statement. "Everyone here at the bank is shocked and in disbelief. Lyola was loved by her fellow Bank of Hawaii employees and her customers.

"She was so upbeat with a positive spirit. We received numerous customer compliments pointing out her excellent service. We're going to miss her very much."

Bank of Hawaii and its employees will also be assisting the family. The family's wishes are to return the woman's body to her native Palau, where the bank has a branch.

Funeral arrangements in Honolulu are pending.

Mesebeluu was found bleeding on the bedroom floor by police who responded to complaints of a domestic argument at 4:10 a.m. Saturday.

Keith Mesebeluu was standing near the bedroom door covered in blood. Sigrah was found sitting on the kitchen floor, also covered in blood, according to a police affidavit filed in District Court.

Keith Mesebeluu, 26, told police that Sigrah stabbed him and his family. Mesebeluu's 2-year-old daughter, Kiarra, was in the bedroom with her mother and also was injured.

Police found a large kitchen knife, believed to be the murder weapon, at the scene. Prosecutors plan to seek extended sentencing of life in prison without the possibility of parole if Sigrah is convicted of first-degree attempted murder.

The enhanced sentencing applies to the attempted murder of the child.
