Senior rover Conrad Scheidt returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter and Kevin Doo added a 30-yard fourth-quarter field goal last night to help Kamehameha deny visiting 'Iolani, 9-0, in Interscholastic League of Honolulu action at Kunuiakea Stadium.
The Warriors, ranked No. 6 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the ILH. 'Iolani, ranked No. 5, fell to 7-2, 5-1.
The Raiders were coming off a 35-30 upset of then-No. 1 Saint Louis, but were limited to 81 yards and were intercepted four times last night. It was their first shutout loss in 24 games, since a 23-0 loss to Kamehameha in 2006.
Scheidt's interception, with 2:27 remaining in the third quarter, ended a scoreless battle. He picked off an errant throw by 'Iolani quarterback Jarrett Arakawa in the center of the field, then dashed to the end zone toward the left pylon.
"We were just in a 'Cover 2' with four under, and we had really good pressure up front," said Scheidt, who is being recruited by the University of Hawai'i and four or five Pac-10 Conference schools. "I was playing under No. 2's (Travis Sato's) 'in' (route), and the ball was thrown short. It was a coverage interception, not really me making a play, and I had good blocking (on the return)."
The extra-point attempt snap was fumbled and a two-point conversion pass failed, but Doo's field goal with 9:20 left in the game made it a two-possession margin.
The Raiders, meanwhile, continued to struggle on offense.
They went three-and-out on their next series, and then were backed up to their own 6-yard line after Arakawa was sacked for an 18-yard loss.
With three timeouts still remaining, 'Iolani elected to punt on fourth-and-22 from its own 12 with 1:51 left, but the Warriors were able to gain two first downs and run out the clock.
"Our defense did an outstanding job, but our offense didn't execute," Raiders coach Wendell Look said. "(Kamehameha) put pressure on us, and when they play man coverage and press and bump (the receivers), it takes longer for the routes to develop. But we didn't take advantage of the chances we had."
'Iolani recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff, but lost the ball on downs on the Warriors' 35. Later in the first half, the Raiders recovered another fumble deep in Kamehameha territory, but missed a 27-yard field-goal attempt.
