Kalihi Stream cleanup set for tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

The city is organizing a cleanup of Kalihi Stream and a tree planting from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at 611 Middle St., which is the site of the new city bus and paratransit facility.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann will be one of the public officials participating in the tree planting, which will take place in the first 30 minutes.

The stream clean up links six sites on Kalihi Stream: Nalanieha Street, North School Street, Kuhio Park Terrace, Kalihi Waena, Middle Street and Keehi Lagoon.

The goals of the program are to create awareness of non-point source pollution, encourage partnerships between the public and government, and provide information to help motivate positive change to keep streams healthy, according to a city news release.

Volunteers should be at least 12 years old and wear covered shoes. The city will provide supplies, T-shirts, educational materials and refreshments.
