Afalava helps key Oregon State's upset

Oregon State senior safety Al Afalava, a 2005 Kahuku High alum from La'ie, had four tackles and broke up a pair of passes in last week's upset of then-No. 1 Southern California.
Freshman defensive back Brandon Hardin (Kamehameha '07 of Honolulu) had two tackles and freshman David Pa'aluhi (Wai'anae '07) added one.
Senior linebacker Kaluka Maiava (Baldwin '04 of Wailuku) had 11 tackles, including one for a loss, and broke up a pass for the Trojans.
Oregon State visits unbeaten Utah tomorrow.
MORE FOOTBALL
Oregon sophomore quarterback Jeremiah Masoli (Saint Louis '06) was 9-of-16 passing for 161 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 36 yards on five carries, in a 63-14 win at Washington State Saturday.
Utah junior linebacker Kepa Gaison (Kamehameha '05 of Kane'ohe) tied for a team-high six tackles in Saturday's 37-21 win over Weber State. Sophomore Nai Fotu (Kahuku '07 of La'ie) started at "stud" linebacker, made three tackles and forced a fumble. Senior running back Ray Stowers ('Iolani '04 of Honolulu) carried three times for eight yards. Weber State sophomore quarterback Cameron Higgins (Saint Louis '06 of Hawai'i Kai) passed for 303 yards and three touchdowns, with one going to junior wide receiver Cody Nakamura (Baldwin '05 of Wailuku), who finished with two grabs for 11 yards. Freshman defensive lineman Ryan Eastman (Saint Louis '08 of Honolulu) was in on three tackles for the Wildcats.
Navy senior quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada (Kapolei '04) ran for two touchdowns before exiting Saturday's 24-17 win over Wake Forest after he re-aggravated his injured left hamstring. Kaheaku-Enhada finished with 58 yards passing and 30 rushing.
Stanford sophomore defensive tackle Matthew Masifilo (Campbell '07 of 'Ewa Beach) had five tackles in Saturday's 35-28 win at Washington. Senior defensive end Daniel Te'o-Nesheim (Hawai'i Prep '04 of Waikoloa) had two tackles, including one for a 4-yard loss, for the Huskies.
Idaho sophomore linebacker JoJo Dickson (Baldwin '07 of Wailuku) had seven tackles — two for losses — in Saturday's 45-17 loss at San Diego State. Dickson also forced — and recovered — a fumble in the second quarter.
New Mexico State senior linebacker La'Auli Fonoti (Kahuku '04) had 11 tackles in a 35-24 loss to New Mexico Saturday. Senior defensive end Oren Long (Saint Louis '03 of Honolulu) had six tackles, including a sack, and sophomore defensive end Kawika Shook (Kamehameha '06 of Kapolei) added four stops.
Saddleback sophomore running back Micah Abreu Laybon (Leilehua '07 of Wahiawa) carried 22 times for 159 yards and caught two passes for 13 yards in Saturday's 23-20 loss to Mt. San Antonio. Freshman defensive back Manoa Latu (Saint Louis '08 of Kapahulu) had eight tackles and broke up a pass for Mt. San Antonio.
Midland Lutheran (Texas) junior kicker/running back Paul Maielua (Lahainaluna '05 of Makawao) kicked field goals of 35 and 26 yards in Saturday's 20-7 win over Briar Cliff (Iowa).
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Washington junior libero Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani '05 of Kane'ohe) had 21 digs, with two assists and an ace in Friday's five-set win at Arizona State. In Sunday's five-set win over Arizona, Miyashiro collected a season-high 32 digs, with three assists and an ace for the Huskies (11-1, 2-0 Pac-10). No. 9 Washington hosts No. 8 Cal Friday and No. 6 Stanford Sunday.
St. Mary's (Calif.) sophomore setter Kapua Kamana'o ('Iolani '07 of Honolulu) had 46 assists and 10 digs in a sweep of Seattle Friday. Junior middle blocker Megan Burton ('Iolani '06 of Kapolei) hit .529 (nine kills, zero errors on 17 attempts) for the match and freshman outside hitter Chanteal Satele (Word of Life '08 of Mililani) added two kills and two blocks. In Saturday's sweep of Penn, Kamana'o had 37 assists, eight digs, three aces, two kills and a block. Burton recorded three kills and three blocks and Satele nine kills, three digs and two blocks.
St. John's (N.Y.) senior libero Lena Yee (Moanalua '05 of Honolulu) had 19 digs in a five-set win over Louisville Sunday. Yee came up with nine digs and two assists in a sweep of Cincinnati Friday.
Syracuse senior defensive specialist Marissa Kanemura (University High '05 of Honolulu) had 10 digs and an ace in a sweep of Cornell last Wednesday. In Sunday's sweep of Rutgers, Kanemura went for 16 digs and an ace and freshman defensive specialist Ashley Williams (Kamehameha '08 of 'Ewa Beach) added three digs.
Oregon State junior setter Camilla Ah-Hoy (Kahuku '06 of La'ie) had 21 assists, six digs and an ace in a three-set loss at Stanford Friday. Against Cal Sunday, Ah-Hoy had 24 assists, one digs and a block in a losing effort.
Central Washington sophomore libero Brandie Vea (Kalani '07 of Honolulu) had 21 digs, two assists and an ace in a four-set loss to Western Washington Thursday. In a five-set win over Seattle Pacific Saturday, Vea recorded 37 digs and two assists.
MEN'S SOCCER
Gonzaga junior forward/midfielder Tye Perdido (Seabury Hall '06 of Kula) scored his fourth goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Portland Friday. Perdido, assisted by Bryan Mullaney, scored from 3 yards on a shot into the lower left corner of the goal that came in the 46th minute.
Washington sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Fung ('Iolani '06 of Honolulu) started Sunday's match against Gonzaga and made two saves in the win.
Pacific (Ore.) junior midfielder Kevin Fujimoto (Kalani '06 of Honolulu) scored in the 24th minute of a 3-2 win over Linfield Saturday.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Pacific (Ore.) junior midfielder/defender Cheryl Yasumoto (Pearl City '06 of Waipi'o) scored in the 84th minute of a 4-3 double-overtime win over Linfield Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Kanda (Castle '07 of Kane'ohe) had two assists, including one of Yasumoto's goal, which sent the game into overtime. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Ichimura (Baldwin '07 of Wailuku) made eight saves for the Boxers.
CROSS COUNTRY
Illinois Tech sophomore Kevin Acacio (Waipahu '07 of Waipahu) placed 64th out of 81 runners at Saturday's Lake Forest Invitational with an 8-kilometer time of 33 minutes, 31 seconds. Illinois Tech finished second out of eight teams with 46 points.
Soka (Calif.) freshman Alexandria Andrist (Mid-Pacific '08 of Honolulu) finished 320th out of 336 runners at Saturday's UC Riverside Invitational with a 5K time of 24:39.3. Soka placed 33rd out of 34 teams with 1,013 points.
At Saturday's Stanford Invitational, Cal State Stanislaus freshman Dawson Vorderbruegge (Kaiser '08 of Hawai'i Kai) finished 196th out of 234 runners with an 8K time of 28:11. The Warriors finished 24th out of 28 teams in the men's standings with 726 points. In the women's race, Pepperdine sophomore Chelsea Wishard (Kaua'i '07 of Lawa'i) placed 25th in a field of 278 runners with a 6K time of 22:08. The Waves placed 13th out of 33 teams with 343 points.
Amherst (Mass.) sophomore Christina Wong (Punahou '07 of Honolulu) finished 48th out of 179 runners at Saturday's Purple Valley Classic with a 6K time of 24:52. Amherst finished third out of 18 teams with 99 points.
MEN'S WATER POLO
Loyola Marymount sophomore driver Andrew Aki (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) scored two goals in a 12-11 win at UC San Diego last week. No. 7 LMU hosts UC Santa Cruz tomorrow.
TENNIS
Pacific (Ore.) freshmen Megan Yoshimoto (Mililani '08) and Cat Goya (St. Andrew's Priory '08 of Kane'ohe) advanced to the doubles' finals of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Northwest Women's Championship. Yoshimoto and Goya were the second seed and fell to top-seeded Elise Otto and Katie Oost of Whitman (Wash.). Yoshimoto and Goya went 4-1 in the tournament.
