San Diego State tops Rainbow Wahine in basketball

Paris Johnson hit 15-of-19 field goal attempts en route to 31 points to lead San Diego State to a 71-48 victory over Hawai'i today during the opening day of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Aztecs (3-2) also got 13 points from Jen Layton-Bailes. Johnson had a team-high seven rebounds.

Megan Tinnin had 12 points and eight rebounds to lead the Rainbow Wahine (0-4).

San Diego State went out to 14-5 lead, but the Rainbow went on a 11-1 run to take a 16-15 lead with 10:45 remaining in the first half. A 3-pointer by Quenese Davis gave the Aztecs a 18-16 lead. UH tied it at 18 on a Tinnin jumper.

Layton-Bailes' jumper gave San Diego State the lead for good, 20-18, with 9:50 to go in the first half.

The Aztecs led 38-23 at halftime and outscored UH 8-2 to start the second half to take control.

SDSU shot 49 percent from the field to UH's 39 percent.

The Rainbow Wahine play No. 19 Purdue today at 1:10 p.m.

NO. 5 STANFORD 78, NO. 19 PURDUE 70

Jayne Appel scored eight consecutive points in overtime to lift the Cardinal (4-1) to a victory over the Boilermakers (3-1) in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic. Appel overcame a rough start and finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds, and Nnemkadi Ogwumike added 17 points and six rebounds for the Cardinal.

NO. 25 IOWA STATE 75, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 59

Alison Lacey had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cyclones (4-0) to the win in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic. Gaeti Werema and Chari Smith each had 12 points for the Lady Panthers (1-4).
