DAVIE, Fla. — Linebacker Channing Crowder wasn't the only Miami Dolphins player whose wallet became a little lighter as a result of Sunday's loss to the Patriots.

Friday, the NFL fined linebacker Joey Porter $7,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct during the fourth quarter.

Guard Justin Smiley was also fined $5,000 for a low block on Patriots defensive end Richard Seymour.

The game also featured a fight between Crowder and Patriots tackle Matt Light that drew $15,000 fines Wednesday for both players.

Smiley, who plans to appeal the fine, blamed the chop block on a miscommunication between him and tailback Ricky Williams, who was also involved in the block on Seymour.

"I would never do anything malicious to hurt a player," Smiley said. "All I was really trying to do was protect my quarterback."

More than the fine, Smiley said the sack Seymour got against him earlier in the game upsets him.

"Giving up a sack is like having your soul taken from you," Smiley said.

"I protect my quarterback. That's what I take pride in doing, and when I don't get the job done it hurts. It sticks with you."

Fortunately for Smiley, he'll likely have his line partner, left tackle Jake Long, playing next to him in Sunday's game against the Rams.

Long participated in his second straight practice and coach Tony Sparano is optimistic he'll play.

Porter's fine stemmed from two penalties he received for verbal abuse.

Tryouts

The Dolphins worked out three players, and one happens to be a former Cowboys starter.

Center Al Johnson, who started 31 games for Dallas in four seasons, participated in a tryout to fill the roster spot created by Greg Camarillo's season-ending knee injury.

Rookie fullback Chris Brown and safety Herana-Daze Jones also worked out.

Johnson (6-5, 305) started 14 games for the Cardinals last season before undergoing two knee operations this offseason. He was placed on injured reserve before the start of the season and waived in late October, which prompted him to file a grievance against the club.

Jones is a three-year veteran who played in 28 games for the Bengals, registering 43 tackles before receiving an injury settlement earlier this month.

During his career at the University of Tennessee, Brown, a converted tight end, caught 92 passes for 736 yards and eight touchdowns. Jacksonville cut him from its practice squad earlier this week.

The Bengals signed Kirk Barton off the Dolphins' practice squad. His spot was immediately filled by cornerback Will Billingsley.

Injury report

Rams tailback Steven Jackson, who has missed the past five games because of a thigh injury, is listed a questionable for Sunday's game.

Quarterback Marc Bulger (concussion) and Pro Bowl offensive lineman Orlando Pace (knee) are expected to play, if not start.
