CBKB: Upcoming Wahine foe, Stanford, loses point guard for the season

Associated Press

STANFORD, Calif. — Stanford point guard JJ Hones is out for the season with a knee injury, the second time in two years she's torn a ligament in her left knee.

Hones was diagnosed Tuesday with a torn ACL, sustained late in the first half of an 81-47 win against Rutgers on Sunday. She tried to plant her foot for a shot and fell to the court. Hones was averaging 10.5 points.

"We are all very disappointed to see this happen to JJ," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "She was playing spectacularly well at this early stage of the season and our team will miss her greatly."

The fifth-ranked Cardinal (3-1) are short on players in the backcourt. Jeanette Pohlen could take over the starting point guard duties with help from Rosalyn Gold-Onwude and Melanie Murphy.

The Cardinal travel to Hawaii on Wednesday for a weekend tournament. They open play Friday against No. 19 Purdue, and play No. 25 Iowa State and Hawaii.
