PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Michael Dougherty passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as Brown routed Columbia, 41-10, today for a share of the Ivy League championship.

Brown has won four Ivy League football titles. This year, the team is co-champion with Harvard, which beat Yale on Saturday.

Brown (7-3, 6-1 Ivy League) beat Harvard (9-1, 6-1), 24-22 during the regular season, but the league doesn't allow for tiebreakers to determine a champion.

Dougherty completed 19-of-35 passes for 261 yards, including touchdown passes of 32 yards to Colin Cloherty, 21 yards to Buddy Farnham and 13 yards to Bobby Sewall.

He also ran 22 yards for a touchdown in the first half that put Brown ahead for good, at 14-7.

Columbia's M.A. Olawale completed 4-of-10 passes for 21 yards before leaving with an injury. Jerry Bell completed 8-of-14 attempts for 57 yards.

"We worked hard. We deserved it," Brown coach Phil Estes said. "We said at the beginning of the year that was our goal. I can't be happier than I am now."

"As far as I'm concerned, the way I'm going to spin it is we beat Harvard so we won the whole thing," Estes said.

Brown caught the game's first break when Andrew Serrano recovered a fumbled punt by Austin Knowlin on Columbia's 26. That led to a 3-yard touchdown run by Sewall on a split end reverse three minutes into the first quarter.

Columbia scored its sole touchdown near the midway point of the period when Olawale sprinted 70 yards virtually untouched.

Brown, however, went on to score 17 unanswered points, including a touchdown run by Dougherty and a pass to Cloherty.

Columbia's Jon Rochall kicked a 23-yard field goal with three seconds left in the first half. Brown's offense, however, maintained pressure on their opponents and on the third play of the third quarter, Steve Ziogas intercepted a Shane Kelly pass.

Dougherty, on the ensuing play, lofted a 21-yard touchdown pass to Farnham in the end zone making it 31-10.

Brown's Miles Craigwell then recovered a Kelly fumble, which led to a 26-yard field goal by Rob Ranney.

Dougherty applied the finishing touch when he lofted a 13-yard touchdown pass to Sewall with 3:37 left in the period.

Brown held Columbia to 224 yards of total offense and just 25:18 in time of possession.
