WAIPI'O
Ryukyu musical marks Okinawan Center decade

About 80 high school students from Katsuren, Okinawa, will give two performances of the traditional Okinawan musical "Amawari, the Lord of Kimutaka Spirit" at the Hawaii Okinawan Center on Sunday to help mark the 10th anniversary of the gathering place in Waipi'o Gentry.

Performances will be at 1 and 6 p.m. in the Legacy Ballroom. The center is at 94-857 Ukee St. Tickets are $25 ($15 for high schoolers and younger). Proceeds benefit the Hawai'i United Okinawa Association. Call 676-5400 for tickets and more information or go to www.huoa.org.

"Amawari" will be performed in the classic ryukyu, or Okinawan, style of kumiodori, which incorporates music, dance and dialogue. The 300-year-old kumiodori is similar to Japanese noh or kabuki.
