Big Island police today charged a 35-year-old man with allegedly causing the death of Daniel Martina, who died Friday at The Queens Medical Center from injuries suffered in an assault Nov. 1 in Pahoa.
Robert Grant of Pahoa, found hiding Saturday at a Nanawale home, was charged with manslaughter and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail at the Hawai'i Community Correctional Center, according to case investigator Det. Rio Amon-Wilkins. Grant was sent to court earlier today on two outstanding contempt warrants, Amon-Wilkins said.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office is not identifying the victim but did release autopsy findings, which listed cause as "craniocerebral injury from blunt force injury to the head due to assault" and manner of death as homicide.
Martina, 47, was found unconscious at 1:22 p.m. in a parking lot near the Pahoa Fire Station. Police said he was kicked in the chest and struck his head on the pavement when he fell to the ground.
Rory Libarios, 47, was charged Saturday with hindering prosecution for allegedly hiding Grant in his home. Libarios was released yesterday after posting $1,000 bail.
