FUKUOKA, Japan — Grand champion Hakuho sent Toyonoshima crashing down into the ringside Monday, scoring his first win at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

Mongolian Hakuho bulldozed the top maegashira toward the straw ridge as soon as he released himself from a locked position, sending his opponent down into the ringside cushions in the day's final bout at Fukuoka Kokusai Center.

Hakuho, seeking his ninth Emperor's Cup at the 15-day tournament, and Toyonoshima are both 1-1.

Hakuho's Mongolian rival, grand champion Asashoryu, is sitting out the tournament with an elbow injury.

Mongolian sekiwake Ama nearly tripped at the face-off but quickly got hold of Hokutoriki's belt, shoving him out of the straw ridge. Ama, bidding for promotion to the second-highest rank of ozeki, improved to 2-0, while the No. 3 maegashira is 1-1.

Ozeki Kaio grabbed komusubi Goeido's left arm, throwing him down and leaving both at 1-1.

Ozeki Kotomitsuki shoved out No. 2 maegashira Wakanosato for his second victory, leaving his opponent at 1-1.

Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu slammed top maegashira Futeno on the back, sending him to the dirt surface on all fours.
