HPU soccer has title hopes dashed

The Hawai'i Pacific men's soccer team closed its season with a big victory over Grand Canyon yesterday, but the Sea Warriors fell short of the program's first Pacific West Conference title.
Mark Rogers' goal in the 56th minute beat Grand Canyon, 1-0, and gave HPU (10-5-2, 9-2-1) its first victory over the Antelopes (8-7-4, 7-3-2).
Notre Dame de Namur won the title by beating host Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 3-0, yesterday.
HPU entered the match trailing NDNU (14-3-3, 9-1-2) by one point in the standings. A tie by NDNU would have given HPU a share of the PacWest title.

BASEBALL
CANEFIRES PAD LEAD
Tyler Henson hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning and the West Oahu CaneFires beat the North Shore Honu, 4-1, last night at Hans L'Orange Park.
West Oahu improved to 15-14 and increased its Hawaii Winter Baseball West Division lead over the Honu (13-17) to 2 1/2 games.
West Oahu's Caleb Gindl added a solo home run in the eighth inning.
In the late game, Tony Thomas Jr. had a run-scoring triple and Yonder Alonso added an RBI single in the third inning, and four Waikiki BeachBoys pitchers blanked the Honolulu Sharks, 2-0, at Les Murakami Stadium.
Jeremy Bleich (3-1) tossed five scoreless innings for Waikiki (17-13). He struck out nine and allowed four hits against Honolulu (14-15).
BASKETBALL
BYUH WINS EXHIBITION
Nathan Sims scored a game-high 21 points and added seven rebounds as Brigham Young-Hawai'i routed the New Zealand Saints, 121-58, yesterday in men's exhibition basketball at the Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.
BYUH's Tsung-Hsien Chang added 18 points, Jermaine Odjegba 16, Lucas Alves 11 and Nkosi Stewart 11.
GOLF
KAUAI'S WISE IN FUTURE
LPGA Tour member Hannah Jun won the Duramed Futures Tour's qualifying tournament yesterday at Lakeland, Fla., closing with an even-par 72 for a one-stroke victory over Swedish amateur Pernilla Lindberg at Lakeland, Fla.
Jun had a 12-under 276 total on the Cleveland Heights course. Lindberg finished with a 72.
Kauai's Lehua Wise shot 75—295 and finished tied for 47th. The 94 players who made the 54-hole cut will receive exempt or non-exempt status for the 2009 Futures Tour.
Maui's Kelly Nakashima (72—225) and Kailua's Bridget Dwyer (75—228) both missed the 554-hole cut.
SURFING
PERKINS, SNOW ADVANCE
Hawai'i surfers Bonga Perkins and Ned Snow advanced to the fourth round of the Oxbow World Longboard Tour contest yesterday at San Clemente, Calif.
The third round was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves at San Onofre Beach.
Perkins had the best wave of the day, receiving a 9.5 (out of 10) in his third-round win over California's Brad Vetter.
Perkins had a two-wave total of 17.5 to top Vetter's total of 17.15.
Snow had a two-wave score of 17.4 to defeat 2006 world champion Josh Constable of Australia yesterday.
Hawai'i surfers Duane DeSoto and Kekoa Uemura were eliminated in the third round.
TENNIS
BODE EARNS WILD CARD
Hawai'i Pacific University's Hendrik Bode won twice yesterday to earn the wild card entry into the 2008 Honolulu Futures.
Bode, HPU's No. 1 singles player from Lehrte, Germany, defeated Matthew Short, from Beckenham, Great Britain, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, for his spot in main draw of the Honolulu Futures next week at the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park Tennis Complex.
In the previous round, Bode defeated Nail Khabiyev, from Brooklyn, New York, 6-3, 6-3.
