Rainbow film fest explores wide range of themes

"Mulligans," the story of a son's college pal who is attracted to his dad, will be screened today as part of the 19th annual Rainbow Film Festival at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts.

The 19th annual Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival, presented by the Honolulu Gay & Lesbian Cultural Foundation, continues through Sunday at Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts.

  • "XXY" (directed and co-written by Lucia Puenzo. Argentina/Spain/ France, 2007, 91 minutes)

    Alex, 15, is on a complicated search for identity. In Spanish with English subtitles.

  • "Another Woman" (directed by Jerome Foulon; France, 2002, 106 minutes)

    Nicholas, who once was a family man, now lives his life as Lea, a woman, who wants her family back. In French with English subtitles.

  • "Mulligans" (directed by Chip Hale; Canada, 2008, 90 minutes)

    College student Tyler invites his buddy Chase to spend the summer holidays with his family, and Chase finds himself attracted to Tyler's father. Lead actor and writer-producer Charlie David (Chase) will attend the screening.

    Preceded by "Heartland" (12 minutes).

  • "Between Love and Goodbye" (directed by Casper Andreas; USA, 2008, 96 minutes)

    Felix and Kyle are in love, but they can't legally marry. There's a marriage of convenience, a mysterious sister and other complications. Director Andreas will be at the screening.

    Documentary focuses on Richard Berkowitz, a gay hustler-turned-AIDS activist, who fought for safe-sex practices.

  • "Tru Loved" (written and directed by Stewart Wade; USA, 2007, 102 minutes)

    Bigotry and humanity are themes in a story about 16-year-old Tru, who moves with her lesbian mothers from gay-friendly San Francisco to a conservative community in Southern California. Wade and producer Antonio Brown will attend.

    Preceded by "Get Me Bodied" (6 minutes). Hawai'i music video features local performer Keisha and friends working it out to one of Beyoncé's hits. Director Brent Anbe will be present.

  • Gala fundraiser: 1920s Garden Cabaret

    Vita Corimbi, who toured with "Menopause the Musical," and her husband Brian Grasmick will perform on piano and trumpet for New Orleans jazz show reminiscent of the 1920s; there's a silent auction, too. Flapper attire suggested.
