Maekawa advances to sectional

Advertiser Staff

University of Oregon freshman Sean Maekawa, last year's Hawai'i state high school champion, came home to win yesterday's U.S. Open local qualifying at Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Big Island, Maekawa, from Pa'auilo, shot 3-under-par 69 on the 7,074-yard Kings' Course.

Maekawa advances to Sectional qualifying at Emerald Valley in Oregon, located 20 minutes from the Ducks' campus. Former Rainbow Jarrett Hamamoto, of Hilo, is first alternate after winning a playoff with Mark Morrison. Both shot 74.

At Saturday's local qualifying on Maui, pro TJ Figueroa and Punahou junior Bradley Yosaitis claimed the two available slots. Figueroa shot 1-under-par 70 at the Royal Ka'anapali Course. Yosaitis was one of four tied for second, at 73, and birdied the two playoff holes to grab the last spot. Darren Summers and Kelii Dias are the two alternates.

Figueroa will play in the June 2 sectional at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif. This year's U.S. Open is June 12 to 15 at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
