McKenzie, Wee win triathlon titles

Australia's Luke McKenzie and Hawai'i's Bree Wee yesterday won the Honolulu Triathlon's Olympic distance race titles.
McKenzie, 27, of Tweed Heads, New South Wales, finished the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer run in 1 hour, 47 minutes, 25 seconds.
Michael Simpson of Vancouver, British Columbia, was second in 1:49:47. Mililani's Timothy Marr was third in 1:50:45.
Wee, of Kailua, Kona, won the women's title in 1:58:38, followed by Laura Springer in 2:09:39 and Mariane Uehara in 2:13:24.
Eduardo Sa and Lisa Tilton-McCarthy won the men's and women's masters, respectively.
Anders Johnson and Belinda Wray won titles in the Honolulu Sprint Triathlon, a 400-meter swim, 11-mile bike and 5-kilometer run.
Johnson finished in 1:02:33, followed by Mark Trumbull in 1:03:07 and Mark Doane in 1:03:14.
In the women's race, Wray finished in 1:13:13, followed by Laura Kloepper in 1:13:32 and Heidi Smith in 1:13:35.
B. Kainalu Picl and Mona Viqueira won the masters men's and women's titles, respectively.
SUMMERER SECOND AT XTERRA WEST EVENT
Honolulu's Marion Summerer finished second yesterday to Canada's Melanie McQuaid at the Xterra West Championship at Temecula, Calif.
It was the highest finish in an Xterra pro race by a Hawai'i resident, according to Xterra officials.
McQuaid finished the 1-mile swim, 20-mile bike and 6-mile trail run in 2 hours, 51 minutes, 31 seconds and won $2,500. Summerer finished in 2:52:58 and earned $2,000.
It was McQuaid's first race as a pro. She won the amateur Xterra World Championship in Maui twice, including last year.
The Xterra West is the first of the five-event National Championship Series for professionals.

PIAA HIGH SCHOOL COMBINE ON MAY 31
The Pacific Island Athletic Alliance Hawai'i High School Football Combine is scheduled for May 31 at Saint Louis School.
Results and video from the pro-style combine will be sent to more than 500 colleges nationwide. It is open to those in the class of 2009, 2010 and 2011. Current high school seniors will not be allowed to register.
Early registration ends Friday, but walk-ins will be allowed on a space-available basis.
PIAA, a non-profit organization, assists prep student-athletes from Hawai'i and American Samoa to secure athletic and academic scholarships and grants with no cost to the player.
PIAA said it has helped to secure more than $10 million for more than 800 student-athletes since its inception.
