Want to make your life a little simpler as well as save some drops of our precious resource, water? Plan a garden that uses wise watering. You can group thirsty plants in one bed close to the house, and fill farther beds with drought-tolerant perennials that need little or no watering.

SAVE THE PLANET

'ECO DOG' TO THE RESCUE

More tips for Fido from "Eco Dog: Healthy Living for Your Pet" by Corbett Marshall and Jim Deskevich (Chronicle Books):

  • Create a dog toy out of recycled materials. Cut a T-shirt into strips, braid it and knot the ends.

  • Fleas can breed in your dog's favorite sleeping spot in the yard. If it is worn down and without grass, you can cover the area with black plastic for a few days. The heat underneath will kill fleas and larvae.
