A taxicab driver accused of repeatedly trying to run over one of his customers was found guilty yesterday of second-degree attempted murder.

A Circuit Court jury deliberated less than three hours before delivering the verdict against Guillermo Fernandez, 52.

Fernandez argued with a 29-year-old customer after dropping him off near the corner of Kiawe Street and Ala Moana Boulevard last June.

Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario will sentence Fernandez Sept. 3.

The case was prosecuted by Michelle Pu'u. The defense attorney was Todd Eddins.

STATE, CITY GIVEN $6M IN GRANTS

The state and city have been awarded more than $6 million in federal grants for the protection of ports, harbors and other critical transportation infrastructure, the state said yesterday.

State Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Robert G.F. Lee said the state and city were awarded the money through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Infrastructure Protection Activities grant program.

"Securing the avenues our goods and workforce use daily is critical to ensuring the welfare of the entire state," Lee said in a written statement.

"We have been working closely with our partners in state and county government and the private sector to strengthen our ports against explosion and high winds," Lee said.

State Civil Defense will administer and distribute the funds to agencies.

The Department of Homeland Security has allocated $4.76 million for the protection of state ports and harbors and $398,000 to improve security systems at selected facilities.

The federal agency has also allocated $843,280 for security improvements to the city's bus system.

GENERAL FUND REVENUES UP 3.2%

State general fund revenue collections are up 3.2 percent over last year through the first 10 months of the fiscal year, according to the state Department of Taxation.

The state collected $323.3 million in general fund revenue in April, including $220.8 million in general excise and use taxes, the largest category. The state took in $20.2 million in hotel room taxes, $73.2 million in individual income taxes, and $4.2 million in corporate income taxes.

The state Council on Revenues has predicted 3.9 percent revenue growth for this fiscal year. The council has downgraded its estimate four times in the past year because of the state's slowing economy.

The council meets again later this month and may again have to lower its forecast.

STABBED MAN IN SERIOUS CONDITION

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A 49-year-old man stabbed at Kapa'a's Fuji Beach Thursday afternoon remained in serious condition at Wilcox Hospital yesterday.

Police arrested a 29-year-old man after others at the beach held the suspect there.

Police did not immediately know what led to the stabbing. Witnesses told police that the suspect was injured when he was subdued by witnesses to the attack.
