The Kapa'a softball team has trusted its fate to a diminutive freshman pitcher, and she's answered the call.

Melina Obar, a 5-foot-1 right-hander, pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts as Kapa'a knocked off No. 2 seed Farrington, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the DataHouse/HHSAA Softball Division II Championships at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

"She knows her job, what she has to do," Kapa'a coach Shelly Samio said. "Being a freshman, she's come a long way. She is part of our team right now and holding us up."

Kapa'a, the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation runner-up, improved to 7-8. The Warriors will play Pac-Five in the semifinals today at 3 p.m. at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Kaua'i and Lana'i will meet in the other semifinal at 1 p.m. at RWSS.

"We deserve it," Obar said. "We worked really hard to get here and it feels good that all the hard work paid off."

Obar wasn't overpowering, but kept Farrington off-balance by changing speeds. She allowed singles in the third and fourth innings. Only one Gonvernors' base runner reached third.

"We know all the teams up here are fastball hitters, so we just told her to maintain her fast pitch and her slow pitch," Samio said.

Obar was confident going up against Farrington, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference champion.

"She just told me, 'You know coach, just leave it up to me.' I can do my job," Samio said.

Hanalei Gomes scored both runs for Kapa'a.

In the third, she came around from second after Jocelyn Enrique's single off the first-base bag and fielding error on the right fielder.

Gomes scored an insurance run in the seventh on Enrique's ground out to the first baseman.

Farrington had the tying run at the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a mistake on the basepaths abruptly ended the game.

With a runner at first, a Governors' batter was thrown out at first by the shorstop. The baserunner rounded second base too far and was thrown out by the Kapa'a first baseman.

"We're really happy," Obar said. "This is my first year of high school and our first year in states in about 20 years. So it just feels good."

In a 13-1 victory over Nanakuli on Wednesday, Obar was the winning pitcher.

Samio is in her first year as Kapa'a head coach after serving two years as an assistant.

"These girls really look up to me. They told me, 'coach, we're going to do this for you,'" she said.

Farrington junior right-hander Felicia Tui pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts.

"She pitched a good game," Farrington coach Glen Zukeran said. "I'm proud of her. She came back and tried her best. The hits just didn't fall for us and they fell for them."

KAUA'I 8, WAIALUA 1

Kaua'i's Wailana Borrero had her way against Waialua, and it didn't matter whether her father/coach Darrell Borrero or catcher Krystal Ijima was calling the pitches.

Borrero, a junior right-hander, pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts as Kaua'i beat Waialua in a quarterfinal game.

"In the beginning, I was calling the pitches and she wasn't satisfied with how I was calling pitches," Darrell Borrero said. "She called the pitches (with Ijima) from then on and she did a great job."

Borrero allowed one run on three hits over the first three innings with her father calling pitches. After that, she wanted Ijima to call the pitches.

"He's my dad, so of course we're going to argue," said Borrero, who added she went more to her fastball after the switch.

Kaua'i, the KIF champion and No. 1 seed, improved to 12-1. Waialua, the OIA's No. 3 team, dropped to 12-4.

Of the 21 outs recorded by Wailana Borrero, only one was recorded by an outfielder.

"I was throwing fastballs," she said. "I threw a couple screwballs, like a curve into the batter, and a couple of curves away from the batter."

The Red Raiders' Jessica Iwata batted 2 for 4 with a triple, homer and three RBIs, and Borrero was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

Iwata's two-run homer to center in the third put Kaua'i up 3-1.

Waialua junior right-hander Marissa Keao pitched a complete game, but was hurt by five errors. "Eventually, we had to put the ball in the zone," Waialua coach Jay Keao said. "We didn't want to. They got a hold of a few pitches."
