The Department of Defense says an Army soldier based at Schofield Barracks has died of wounds he suffered when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle in Baghdad earlier this month.

Sgt. John K. Daggett of Phoenix died in Halifax, Canada, on Thursday. The 21-year-old was wounded on May 1.

KNXV-TV in Phoenix reports that Daggett was being flown to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C., but the plane was diverted to Canada when his condition worsened.

Daggett was the eighth member of the 25th Infantry Division's 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat team to die in Iraq since the unit deployed there last December.
