Daggers' trip pays off with first-round victory

Advertiser Staff

After nearly missing their state tournament debut because of a lack of funds, the Pahoa High volleyball team shook off nerves to win last night's first-round match.

Randy Balicoco had 12 kills and Christopher Mendoza had 28 assists as Pahoa defeated Hana, 25-19, 25-19, at the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division II state championships at Radford High. The Daggers (9-6) will play fourth-seeded Campbell (10-4) in today's quarterfinal at 6 p.m. at Radford.

When word got out the Daggers might not be able to attend states because of funds, community members and alumni pitched in on Monday to ensure the Daggers would be able to play.

"The boys feel good, we feel good, the boys won this game," Pahoa coach Ikaika Marzo said. "Their feeling is right through the sky, they're so happy, it was well done. I felt we deserved this. Thank you to everybody."

The Daggers took Game 1 after rallying midway through the set against the Dragons (8-3), last season's state runner-up. In Game 2, the Daggers led by as much as 11 before Marzo put in his reserves.

"They came back and we bounced back and won," Marzo said. "They bounced back and now we're ready to play the next game."

Marzo credited libero Jay Bumanglag with key digs and passes during the match.

"It's been a shell-shocker for these kids," Marzo said. "They were really nervous and now it's out of their systems. Over this win, they fell really confident."

Also at Radford, Honoka'a defeated Kahuku, 25-16, 18-25, 25-15. The Dragons (11-4) will face top-seeded Hawai'i Baptist (10-4). At Farrington, Hawai'i Prep defeated Kaimuki, 25-14, 19-25, 25-8, and Waimea defeated Nanakuli, 25-19, 25-13. Hawai'i Prep (8-7) plays No. 2 Seabury Hall (10-0) and Waimea (7-3) will play No. 3 Hilo (10-4).

In Division I tournament first-round matches on Maui, Bryson Williams had nine kills as Lahainaluna defeated Kalaheo, 25-22, 17-25, 25-23, at King Kekaulike High. The Lunas (6-5) meet top-seeded Punahou (16-0) in today's quarterfinals.

Puna Wong had 13 kills for Kalaheo (10-6). Also at Kekaulike, Roosevelt defeated Waiakea 25-16, 25-22. The Rough Riders (15-1) will play No. 3 Kamehameha-Maui (7-3).
