STATE SOFTBALL
Intriguing matchups in state softball

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

A mix of perennial powers and upstart programs provides for interesting matchups in the Data House/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division I Softball Championships, which start today with four first-round games at Rainbow Wahine Stadium.

The action starts at 1 p.m. with Moanalua vs. Waipahu, followed by Campbell vs. Castle at 3, Lahainaluna vs. Division I newcomer Maryknoll at 5 and Kailua vs. 2007 Division II state champion Sacred Hearts at 7.

The 12-team Division II tournament also begins today with four first-round games at Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Here is a closer look at all 12 Division I teams (records are for regular and postseason only):

BALDWIN

Coach: Joe Duran.

Record: 15-3.

Berth: MIL champion.

Notable: The defending state champion Bears return only one starter, junior shortstop Shauna Ah Yen, and have no seniors on the roster. But they rallied late in the season to overtake Lahainaluna for the MIL title in the season finale. Catcher Malia Killam is the only other junior, with the rest of the team made up of freshmen and sophomores.

CAMPBELL

Coach: David Perreira.

Record: 11-4.

Berth: OIA runner-up.

Notable: The Sabers recovered from a rocky midseason to finish strong and push Mililani to the limit in the OIA championship game. Pitcher Bre Patton stranded six runners in a 2-1 victory over Moanalua in the league semifinals. Loreen Egdamin has been a spark at the leadoff spot, and shortstop Leinna Kalua is a key player whether playing shortstop, pitching or hitting. Catcher Anuhea Yamaguchi is athletic and can shut down the running game.

CASTLE

Coach: Jon Berinobis.

Record: 11-5.

Berth: OIA fifth place.

Notable: The Knights, by tradition, are fundamentally sound and execute well by playing team ball. Freshman pitcher Maycee Moe is not overpowering but makes good pitches and gets the key outs when needed. Freshman first baseman Leisha Li'ili'i is a dangerous power hitter.

KAILUA

Coach: Bernard Victor.

Record: 9-5.

Berth: OIA fourth place.

Notable: The Surfriders do not have the overpowering pitchers or classic power hitters of the past, but still play good defense and make smart pitches. Krista Dumandan has a lot of postseason experience and likely will get the start tonight against Sacred Hearts, but Jaelleen Johnson also has pitched well in big games this season.

KAMEHAMEHA

Coach: Randy Tamura.

Record: 13-1.

Berth: ILH champion.

Notable: The Warriors quietly wrapped up their first league title since 2004, with their only loss coming to Maryknoll, 4-3, in eight innings. Senior ace Amber Waracka has been dominant at times, with 16-strikeout games against Sacred Hearts and St. Francis. Sophomore Jamie Millwood has led the offense with power hitting, and can also contribute on the mound if needed. Senior Dara Pagaduan is a four-year starter and senior Shaleese Javillo is another veteran slugger.

LAHAINALUNA

Coach: Earle Kukahiko.

Record: 15-3.

Berth: MIL runner-up.

Notable: The Lunas led the MIL throughout the regular season but fell to Baldwin, 9-7, in the finale. Senior pitcher Tiffany Bonifacio has state tournament experience and Lahainaluna got 10 hits in what turned out to be the MIL championship game, including three by Ikapela Watson. The Lunas have suffered some key injuries in recent weeks.

MARYKNOLL

Coach: John Uekawa.

Record: 8-6.

Berth: ILH third place.

Notable: The Spartans are making their first Division I state tourney appearance in recent memory. Much of their success has ridden on the arm of junior ace Ariel Silva, whose biggest victory came in relief when she struck out seven in six innings of shutout ball in a 4-3 upset of Kamehameha. Freshman third baseman Kori Nishitomi has provided big hits on offense in recent weeks.

MILILANI

Coach: Rose Antonio.

Record: 13-2.

Berth: OIA third place.

Notable: The Trojans appear to have all the pieces to make a run at returning to the title game for the fourth straight year. They have pitching, hitting, defense and speed. Senior ace Makani Duhaylonsod won the state title game as a freshman and might be the best big-game pitcher in Hawai'i. Sophomores Courtney Senas (shortstop) and Kristi Oshiro (second base) form an All-State middle infield. Junior right fielder Glennelle Nitta, another 2007 All-State first team selection, anchors a solid outfield. Mililani's offense can generate runs with the long ball or short game.

MOANALUA

Coach: Kristie Morikawa.

Record: 13-2.

Berth: OIA third place.

Notable: Na Menehune have one of the state's most dominant pitchers in four-year senior starter Sarah Robinson, a hard-throwing right-hander. Robinson struck out 10 in a 5-0 victory over Kailua in the OIA third-place game and tossed a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts in a quarterfinal win over Leilehua. She also is a dangerous hitter in the No. 3 spot. Senior first baseman Britni Ronolo is another veteran slugger, and sisters Hoku and Dawn Dela Cruz also have come through with clutch hits this season.

SACRED HEARTS

Coach: Wade Okamura.

Record: 9-5.

Berth: ILH runner-up.

Notable: The Lancers are making a return to Division I after winning the DII state title last season. Joselyn Eugenio has been the mainstay pitcher and also is a threat at the plate. Junior catcher Chelsea Kamai and junior shortstop Laura Abellanida have had big hits on offense.

WAIAKEA

Coach: Bo Saiki.

Record: 11-0.

Berth: BIIF champion.

Notable: The Warriors have only four seniors but went unbeaten in league play to win their second straight BIIF title. Pitcher Kirsty Imai and shortstop Kira DeMorales are two veteran leaders. Second baseman Kamie Imai, third baseman Cassandra Ortiz-Wong, catcher Kiah-Lee Taroma and outfielder Crislyn Hashimoto each were named to the BIIF all-star first team.

WAIPAHU

Coach: Funa Kapihe.

Record: 6-10.

Berth: OIA sixth place.

Notable: The Marauders are the surprise team of the OIA, finishing fifth in the OIA West but upsetting Roosevelt in the first round of the league tournament and then knocking off perennial power Kapolei in the consolation round before traveling to the Big Island to beat Hilo in a playoff for the final state tournament berth. Pitcher Elsa Apo was a starting designated hitter on Mililani's 2005 state championship team before transferring. Apo, Sina Nu'u, and Kari and Angie Sakamoto played on Waipahu's baseball team the past two years.
