Kaua'i baseball coach Hank Ibia said he would prefer to play in Division I.

The two teams the Red Raiders routed so far in the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball Division II State Championships would probably prefer that they did, too.

Trent Allianic and Andrew Renaud combined on a four-hitter as Kaua'i beat Moloka'i, 8-0, in a DII semifinal yesterday at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

"DI is our place," Ibia said. "We like to compete with the bigger guys in the state. It's not in our control what happened."

This is the first year of DII state baseball and all three Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation schools were assigned to play at that level.

Kaua'i (13-1), the KIF champion and No. 1 seed, will play Maui Interscholastic League champion and No. 2 seed St. Anthony for the title today at 4 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium. St. Anthony beat Kalaheo, 11-5, in yesterday's other semifinal.

Allianic, a junior right-hander, allowed three hits and one walk over the first five innings against Moloka'i, the MIL runner-up. He struck out seven, including the side in the third on 11 pitches.

"I'm confident in myself where I can pitch good against better hitters," Allianic said.

Allianic faced the minimum over the first three innings, and only one of the 15 outs he recorded was by an outfielder.

"We expected this from Trent, and we always do," Ibia said. "As the game goes on, he becomes a tougher pitcher."

Renaud, a senior right-hander, allowed one hit and one walk with two strikeouts over the final two innings.

In its tournament debut Thursday, Kaua'i routed Kohala, 10-0, in six innings. The two Red Raiders pitchers combined on a no-hitter and faced the minimum 18 batters in a game shortened by the mercy rule.

Against Moloka'i (8-8), Kaua'i scored one in the first, two in the second and five in the fourth. All the runs were unearned with the Farmers committing five errors.

"We had some bad errors," said Moloka'i coach Michael Kamakana. "That really put us down."

The Red Raiders put the game away in the fifth when they sent 11 batters to the plate. There were three hits, three walks and two errors in the inning, and seven consecutive batters reached after two were out.

The big blow of the inning was Kaylen Wakumoto's two-run double to left, which made it 5-0.

"I just hit the ball," Wakumoto said. "I just saw the ball well today for some reason."

Kaua'i's Aaron Soong batted 3 for 3 with two RBIs.
