Brandon Haislet drove in seven runs and batted 5 for 5 to lead Hawai'i over New Mexico State, 17-10, today in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces, N.M.

Haislet doubled and homered and was hit by a pitch. Jon Hee was 4 for 6 with five runs scored.

Matt Daly had control issues and was pulled after three-plus innings, leaving with a 9-3 lead. Since he didn't pitch the required minimum of five innings to get credit for the win, Josh Schneider (4-2) was deemed the most effective with his four innings of work, allowing a run on five hits for the Rainbows (25-27 overall, 17-14 WAC).

Dillon Smith (2-5) lasted just 1 1/3 innings, allowing six runs, five hits and four walks for the Aggies (26-28, 13-14).

The Rainbows batted around in the first in taking a 3-0 lead. Matt Roquemore led off with a walk, took second when Greg Garcia grounded out to second and took third on Jon Hee's infield single. Brandon Haislet doubled to right-center to make it 1-0 with Hee stopping at third. Jeff Van Doornum singled to left to score Hee and stop Haislet at third. Kevin Macdonald walked to load the bases, but Vinnie Catricala struck out. Evan Zimny walked to force in a run to make it 3-0.

The Aggies took advantage of control issues by Daly to get a run in the bottom of the first. Richard Stout and Bryan Marquez walked in succession. Joseph Scaperotta struck out and Marquez was caught stealing second for a double play, as Stout took third. But a wild pitch by Daly scored Stout to make it 3-1 before Chris Auten struck out to end the inning.

Hawai'i continued its assault on Smith. Roquemore led off with a walk, but was forced at second on Garcia's grounder to first. Hee was hit by a pitch and Haislet loaded the bases with a flare single to left. Van Doornum doubled to bring home two to make it 5-1 with Haislet stopping at third.

Smith was pulled for Noah Garza. Haislet scored on Macdonald's sacrifice fly to left to make it 6-1.

The Rainbows scored three for the third consecutive inning. Landon Hernandez singled with one out and took second on Roquemore's single. Roquemore was forced at second on Garcia's grounder to third to put runners at the corners. Hee singled to left to score Hernandez and send Garcia to third.

After Hee stole second, Haislet followed with a two-run single to left to make it 9-1.

The Aggies cashed in Daly's wildness in the bottom of the third. Franky Busani and Justin Lucero opened with successive walks and Stout's single loaded the bases. Marquez struck out and Leo Aguirre fouled out to third, but Auten's two-run single pulled NMSU to 9-3.

Daly's control problems led to an exit in the fourth, when he allowed another run. After an infield single by Quade, a wild pitch and walk to Leghorn, Daly was pulled for Cameron Wheeler, who struck out Busani. But a walk to Justn Lucero loaded the bases to set up Stout's sacrifice fly to right to make it 9-4.

Haislet's two-run home run in the fifth increased UH's lead to 11-4.

The Aggies add four in the fifth. Aguirre and Auten singled to put runner at first and second. Aguirre took third when Tyler Hardt flied out to right. Marcus Quade's double to left-center scored the runners to make it 11-6.

After Leghorn struck out, Busani hit a two-run homer to center to make it 11-8.

Josh Schneider started the top of the sixth and the Aggies quickly scored on him. Stout led off with a double, took third when Marquez flied out to center and scored on Aguirre's sacrifice fly to center to pull NMSU to 11-9.

The Rainbows added three in the seventh. Against Oliver Webster, Roquemore singled, Garcia walked and Hee singled to load the bases. Matt Van Deelen replaced Webster, who hit Haislet with a pitch to force a run in to make it 12-9. Van Doornum struck out, but Macdonald's two-run single made it 14-9, as Haislet stopped at second. After Catricala struck out, Van Deelen was pulled for Frankie Duran, who got pinch hitter Shane Hoey on a fly to center to end the inning.

The Aggies continued to scratch away in the seventh. Leghorn singled with two outs, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Busani's single to make it 14-10.

Kyle Hammond started the eight inning for the Aggies and UH wasted little time in scoring off him. Hernandez reached on a two-base fielding error by the left fielder and scored on Roquemore's double to left to make it 15-10.

Garcia's single moved Roquemore to third. After Hee popped out to short, Haislet singled to right to score Roquemore to make it 16-10.

The Rainbows added insurance in the ninth. Catricala led off with a walk, took second on a wild pitch and after pinch hitter Alex Myers grounded out to short, scored on Hernandez's single to center to make it 17-10.
