Cazimero, hälau on PBS tonight and Thursday

Advertiser Staff

Robert Cazimero, kumu hula of the award-winning Halau Na Kamalei, will be a guest on "Long Story Short With Leslie Wilcox," at 7:30 p.m. today on PBS Hawaii.

Further, a documentary on Cazimero and his halau will be shown Thursday.

Cazimero (with brother Roland) also is part of the Brothers Cazimero, the vocal-instrumental combo.

But as a dancer and kumu, Cazimero — former student of Maiki Aiu Lake, founder of Hula Halau O Maiki — has distinguished himself and has played a vital force in the 1970s rejuvenation of Hawaiian hula, here and abroad.

His achievements — and the pride and power of his male dancers — were the subject in the Independent Lens presentation of "Na Kamalei: The Men of Hula," a documentary that marked the halau's 30th anniversary as it prepared for competition in the rigorous and rousing Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo in 2005. This documentary will air at 8:30 p.m. Thursday on PBS, followed by an encore showing of "Long Story Short."
