Moanalua's boys claimed their first O'ahu Interscholastic Association judo team championship since 1997 with a 47-35 win over two-time defending league champion Pearl City last night at 'Aiea.
Na Menehune, in a surprise strategy, competed with just the first seven weight classes against the Chargers.
"We played our strongest seven," Moanalua coach Brandon Maki said. "We felt that our seven was strong enough to win."
Na Menehune gave up 10 points apiece in the 198-, 220- and 275-pound bouts.
Moanalua got 10-point wins by Ryan Shito (108 pounds), Justin Osumi (145) and Branen Yamamoto (178).
Yamamoto threw Pearl City's Aaron Puahala for ippon to put his team up 47-5 with the three uncontested matches left to play, clinching Na Menehune's seventh OIA title.
"Yamamoto was clutch when we needed him most," Maki said.
Moanalua topped Mililani, 47-35, in the semifinal round. Pearl City beat Roosevelt, 77-20, to get to the final.
Pearl City's girls defended their title with 50-27 win over Kahuku in the final.
"We lost half of our team last year, but we're built on sophomores and freshmen this year," Pearl City coach Robin Puahala said. "They deserve it, they've been working hard."
One of the Chargers' two seniors — 115-pounder Jessica Domingo — won all three of her matches by ippon.
"Jessica Domingo is one of our valedictorians. She knows how to play smart judo and she's a great leader," Puahala said.
Domingo threw Kahuku's Christy Burt for ippon in the title match.
Pearl City beat Farrington, 70-30 in the semifinal round and Kahuku edged McKinley, 45-35, to reach the final.
It was the Chargers' fifth OIA championship.
