Kevin Macdonald's two-run flare single to right with two outs capped a three-run bottom of the ninth to rally Hawai'i past Sacramento State, 8-7, today to give the Rainbows the Western Athletic Conference series at Les Murakami Stadium.

Landon Hernandez reached on an infield single to first and was lifted for pinch runner Kevin Fujii, who took second when Matt Roquemore grounded out to first. Greg Garcia singled to right to score Fujii to make it 7-6. Jon Hee singled to left as Garcia pulled up at second.

Brandon Haislet popped out to first. Jeff Van Doornum walked to load the bases. Macdonald then flared a single to right to score the tying and winning runs.

Corey Weglin gave up five runs, six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings for the Hornets (20-27 overall, 11-12 WAC). Jeff Roth (2-2) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing three runs.

Josh Schneider allowed five runs (three earned), five hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings for the Rainbows (24-25, 16-12). Jayson Kramer allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings. Corey Kahn (3-2) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Like Saturday's second game of the doubleheader, the Hornets jumped on the Rainbows for three in the first inning. Hunter Martinez led off with a single to short and stole second before Ryan Blair walked. Both advanded on David Flores' sacrifice. Martinez scored on Jacobo's sacrifice fly to center. Wes Oberlin reached first safely on third baseman Vinnie Catricala's throwing error that allowed Blair to take third. Tim Wheeler's perfectly executed hit-and-run single through the vacated shortstop area where shortstop Jon Hee broke to cover second scored Blair to make it 2-0. Brian Boyd reached on a fielding error by Hee that allowed Oberlin to score to make it 3-0.

The Rainbows responded in the bottom of the first. With one out, Garcia and Hee drew successive walks. Garcia took third when Haislet flied out to right. Right fielder Brian Boyd's sliding effort to snag Van Doornum's liner to right turned into a two-run double to pull UH to 3-2.

The Hornets added two in the fourth and chased Schneider in the process. Blake Crosby led off with a single, took second on Travis Kirkman's sacrifice and slipped around third base and returned there after Martinez's single to center. Alex Capaul came in for Schneider.

Capaul's first offering was a wild pitch that scored Crosby and sent Martinez to second, where he scored on Ryan Blair's single to center to make it 5-2.

The Rainbows woke up in the seventh to tie the game at 5. Catricala led off with a single and took second on a pick-off throwing error by Weglin. Ryan Asato, making a rare start, hammered his first career home run over the right-field wall to pull UH to 5-4. One out later, Roquemore singled to left to chase Weglin for Tommy Elrod.

Garcia's line single to right-center sent Roquemore to third. Elrod was pulled for Jeff Roth. Hee grounded to short for a force at second and beat the relay to first, allowing Roquemore to score the tying run. Hornets coach John Smith was ejected arguing the call.

But the Hornets wasted little time regaining the lead. Kirkman was hit by a pitch to start the inning, took second on Martinez's sacrifice and scored on Blair's single to center to give Sacramento State a 6-5 lead. Flores' single to right moved Blair to second. Jacobo singled to right, but Blair was thrown out trying to score on a perfect throw from right fielder Van Doornum. Oberline was intentionally walked and

Kramer was pulled for the left-handed Sam Spangler to face the left-handed hitting Wheeler, who was hit by a pitch to force in a run to make it 7-5.

The Hornets had another ejection in the UH eighth. Van Doornum led off by reaching on a shortstop Crosby's throwing error, prompting an argument from coach Don Barbara, who also got himself ejected.

Macdonald walked on four pitches to put runners at first and second. Catricala struck out. But Asato grounded to short for an inning-ending double play.
