Mililani's Courtney Senas wasn't about to get robbed twice yesterday against Kailua.
Senas lined a go-ahead, two-run double to right-center in the bottom of the sixth inning as Mililani beat Kailua, 3-1, in the semifinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference softball tournament at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
"That was a clutch hit," said Mililani coach Rose Antonio. "We were hitting the ball hard all night. In the gaps, they were making spectacular defensive plays. You're bound to have one just drop. That was awesome. That was really, really clutch on her part."
Senas' hit came on a 1-1 pitch with one out and plated Rebecca Lee and Kristi Oshiro, who were both in scoring position, to make it 2-1 Mililani.
In her previous at-bat in the fourth, Senas was robbed of extra bases by Kailua center fielder Tiffany Pereza, who made a spectacular diving catch in the left-center power alley.
"I was kind of mad, but then I got pumped up after," said Senas, a sophomore.
Glenelle Nitta drove in Senas an out later to make it 3-1.
Mililani, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, improved to 13-1 and will be looking for consecutive Red Conference titles tonight at 7 at CORP against Campbell.
"This whole team already experienced an OIA title last year," Antonio said. "We have 13 returnees. They know what it's like."
Makani Duhaylonsod, a senior right-hander, pitched a four-hitter with zero walks and zero strikeouts for Mililani, the West champion. The Trojans' defense committed one error.
"I know my defense will always work hard for me because I can't always pitch strikeouts," Duhaylonsod said. "I don't look for pitching strikeouts. I just look to pitch a decent game so my defense can back me up and work hard."
Kailua, the East runner-up, fell to 9-5 and will play at Moanalua for third today at 3 p.m.
The Surfriders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth with two outs on a seeing-eye single to left by Kawehilani Hall, which scored Dionne Ehulani Naki from second.
"I had a lot of faith and confidence in my team; we were going to come back and play harder," Duhaylonsod said.
In Mililani's half of the sixth, Lee reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, and advanced to second on a bunt single by Oshiro.
After a pop out on a bunt attempt, Senas stepped to the plate and lined a pitch to the wall in right.
"My team did their job and I thank them for everything," Senas said. "I was praying so hard I could at least get a hit and help my team out."
Kailua coach Bernard Victor said the key play was the error to start the inning.
"The first runner, we let her on," he said. "The error, that was the key to the whole game right there. It picked them up and it kind of let us down."
Duhaylonsod threw 51 of her 67 pitches for strikes. She didn't have any three-ball counts and went to two balls only three times.
"She's spotting the ball and the defense made the plays behind her," Antonio said.
Duhaylonsod, while not overpowering, used a nasty change-up to keep the Kailua hitters off-balance.
"I like to mix it up and keep the batters guessing," she said.
Kailua right-hander Jaelleen Johnson pitched a six-hitter and only one run against her was earned. She didn't walk or strikeout anyone.
"For a sophomore, she pitched a good game," Victor said.
