A suspected drunken driver today struck a pedestrian and caused damage to three parked cars in Kalihi Valley.

Peter Hirakawa, 77, of a Numana Road address in Kalihi Valley was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, a misdemeanor, and arrested for investigation of first-degree negligent injury.

Police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Lorenzo Ridella said alcohol was an apparent factor in today's 3:30 p.m. collision on Kamehameha IV Road, 101 feet north of Kilohi Street near Ka'ewai Elementary School.

Hirakawa was driving a 1998 Nissan Altima which veered to the right, struck a parked 2008 Chevy Cobalt, jumped the curb and hit a 17-year-old boy before colliding into a cement wall and parked 2000 Toyota Corolla, police said. The impact forced the Corolla into another parked car, a 2005 Mazda MX6.

Ridella said the boy was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition with a broken leg, possible fractured arm and numerous cuts.
