University of Hawai'i senior Magnus Frick was beat out on the final dive yesterday and finished second in the 1-meter springboard for the second straight year at the NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Georgia senior Chris Colwill scored 76.80 on his final dive — nearly 14 points more than Frick's final dive — to win by seven points at Federal Way, Wash.

Frick reached the final round as the eighth, and last, qualifier with 329.065 points, then "upped his game," according to UH assistant coach Anita Rossing.

He opened the final round with his worst dive, scoring only 59.80, and Colwill started with a score of 72.00. Frick fought his way back, scoring 74.40 on his third dive — the third-highest score of the finals.

Frick finished with 399.70 points, while Colwill's big close gave him 407.25.

"I'm really proud of him," said Rossing. "It's a little bittersweet again because he was so close and he was leading going into the last few rounds."

Colwill's last dive was a reverse 2 1/2 pike. He was the only diver to attempt that dive with the pike and his high degree of difficulty, combined with a great effort, was enough to overtake Frick, who came up a "little bitty short" on a reverse 2 1/2 tuck.

"Just a little more pulling and that would have been it," Rossing said. "But I'm really proud of him because he's had this problem with his tricep. He hasn't done many head-first entries the last three or four weeks and to be able to dive like that was awfully good."

The 3-meter will be contested today, with Frick and Mats Wiktorsson, another UH senior from Sweden, scheduled to dive. Wiktorsson is also in the platform diving tomorrow. Frick finished third in the 3-meter last year and, with yesterday's top-eight finish, is now a three-time All-American.

Last week, Rainbow Wahine sophomore Emma Friesen won the women's 1-meter at the nationals and was named Tri-Diver of the Year by the NCAA.

UH'S HOUSTON TO TRAIN WITH U.S. A2 TEAM

The University of Hawai'i's Jamie Houston is among the 22 athletes named to the U.S. Women's Senior A2 National Team.

The 22 players, all with collegiate eligibility remaining, will split into two squads to train and compete at the USA Volleyball Adult Open Championships, May 24 to 31 in Atlanta.

Houston, who will be a senior in the fall, is one of seven outside hitters on the team. She was part of the U.S. Women's National A2 team last year and played on the 2005 U.S. Women's Junior National Training Team in 2005.
