More from the folks at the International Year of the Reef: Hawai'i's nearshore reefs generate about $800 million, nearly 10 percent of revenue contributed by tourism to the state's economy. Each year reefs along Maui's Kihei coast alone add $34 million, but the degradation of those reefs result in an annual loss of more than $20 million as blooms of algae in Kihei cut hotel and rental income and depressed property values. What can you do? Support reef-friendly ocean-related businesses by asking fishing, boating, hotel, aquarium, dive or snorkeling operators how they protect the reef, and patronize those who care as much as you do.

FINAL WORD
"When I have downtime from the show, (I'll) get on a plane. Fly back and forth to make sure the baby hasn't come. It's gonna be crazy."
