A University of Hawai'i football player recently granted a fifth year of eligibility by the NCAA was charged Saturday with unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and second-degree assault, both felony offenses.

The new charges against 22-year-old Keenan Jones compounds his mounting problems.

According to prosecutors, Jones has Family Court trial dates scheduled in April for separate misdemeanor abuse of household member offenses which allegedly occurred last Nov. 8 and Dec. 23. Jones allegedly was charged as Michael Jonah in those cases, prosecutors said.

Jones has an April 3 trial date for the November abuse case, prosecutors said.

The complainant in all the cases against Jones is a woman, 22, described by police as his girlfriend.

A court document on the latest charges noted "the catalyst" for the domestic problems between the two stems from Jones allegedly using the woman's cable provider to rent 13 porn movies resulting in a bill of over $300.

Jones is accused of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle for allegedly reaching into the woman's car and choking her on Friday at 11:20 a.m. The woman told police Jones called her and asked her to come to his new Wilder Avenue residence so he could pay her the money he owed, the affidavit said.

The woman said she blew her vehicle's horn to get Jones' attention when she arrived and an argument ensued.

While taking the woman's statement for the Friday offense, police were told of a previously unreported incident on March 11.

The document stated the woman alleges she was physically pushed out of her apartment March 11 by Jones at 8:30 p.m. during an argument and that he allegedly slammed the front door on her foot, breaking two toes.

Jones was charged with second-degree assault for the March 11 incident.

Jones was released Saturday night after posting $15,000 bail. His initial appearance on the new charges is scheduled Thursday at District Court.

Jones, a defensive back who played in 11 games in 2007, was granted a medical hardship waiver a few days ago stemming from the 2006 season, when he played in only two games after transferring from a junior college in California, said Derek Inouchi, UH's sports media relations director.

UH spring football practice opens next Monday and the roster of participants has not yet been announced, said Inouchi.

But Jones' status is doubtful.

"He will be suspended indefinitely until the formal investigation is completed," UH football coach Greg McMackin said today through a spokesman of the Jones' situation.
