After opening 20-0, HPU loses first game, 5-3

Advertiser Staff

Carli Jones and Christina Dixon hit solo homers as Dixie State defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 5-3, yesterday in the second game of a softball doubleheader to hand the Sea Warriors their first loss of the season.

Haley Schumers scattered seven hits and struck out seven for the Rebels (16-13 overall, 7-5 Pacific West Conference) in St. George, Utah.

Krystal Plunkett hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning for the Sea Warriors (20-1, 7-1), whose rally in the bottom of the seventh was cut short by a game-ending double play.

HPU, the home team in the doubleheader, scored a run in the seventh to make it 5-3 and had runners on second and third with one out. Ciera Senas flied out to right, and the runner at third was ruled to have left the bag early, resulting in a double play.

Earlier, Nicole Kalakau's RBI single with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of seventh lifted HPU to a 4-3 victory. Courtney Kessell (11-0) pitched a six-hitter with five strikeouts.

Elsewhere in the PacWest, Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Notre Dame de Namur, 6-5, in eight innings before dropping the second game, 6-4. The Seasiders are 7-22 and 4-8; the Argos are 15-16 and 7-5.

Bettye Doering hit a three-run homer in the fifth and Crystal De La Cruz singled home Melissa Lehano with one out in the bottom of the eighth to win it for BYUH, which was the home team in Belmont, Calif.
