'AIEA — Aside from a shaky beginning, Randy Castillo was solid in his first pitching start of the season yesterday.

Castillo struck out 11 and gave up just two hits to lead the 'Aiea High School baseball team to a 6-1 win over Mililani in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West game.

"He was ready; he answered the bell," 'Aiea coach Ryan Kato said. "He was waiting for the start all season, (but) had hiccups along the way."

Castillo, last year's OIA West Player of the Year, was recovering from an injury to his non-throwing shoulder. Though he has played this season, yesterday's start was a game-time decision.

"At this point of the year, I wouldn't want to rush anybody, so we took extra precaution," Kato said. "He always wants to play, but I'm looking more down the road."

Mililani (2-3), ranked ninth in the Advertiser's Top 10 poll, threatened to score early. Three walks by Castillo loaded the bases in the top of the first inning with one out. But Castillo got a strikeout and flyout to end the inning.

Castillo struck out all three Mililani batters in the second, but the Trojans threatened in the third, putting Jordan Queja at third and Micah Yabe at second with two outs. Castillo then got Travis Inouye to ground out to end the inning.

In the fourth, Mililani loaded the bases on an error, a hit batsman and a walk. But with two outs, Castillo struck out Jay Yoshizawa to end the inning.

"Coming off an injury, I was hoping to throw good," said Castillo, who added he wasn't bothered by the sore shoulder during the game.

Meanwhile, Mililani pitcher Dustin Antolin kept 'Aiea in check until the bottom of the third inning. With runners at first and third, Ricky Itagaki singled to right field to score Kainoa Ah Sing-Ka'ahanui. After a passed ball advanced runners to second and third, Brennan Alejo drove in Dane Matsuo with a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 2-0.

Na Ali'i (3-2) loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning and scored a run when Kanekoa Asing was hit by a pitch. Carson Tsuruda's RBI single made it 4-0 and with the bases still loaded, Itagaki drew a walk to increase the lead to 5-0.

"That was tough," Mililani coach Dean Sato said. "We wanted to score some runs but we left too many runners on base.

"The first few innings, had we scored, the game would have been different."

Itagaki doubled in the sixth and scored off Alejo's RBI single and error to make it 6-0. Jaran Iwane then grounded out to Yabe, the Mililani shortstop, who made a diving catch to start an inning-ending double play.

"It's probably the best game we played all season," said Itagaki, who also drove in two runs. "Everyone was hitting good. We just came off from a tough loss against Pearl City and everybody was working hard at practice and came out firing."

Queja tripled to center field leading off the seventh for Mililani. He scored when Yoshizawa's batted ball was fielded off the mound by Castillo, who threw to first base to get the out.
