O'ahu artists (and married couple) Carol D'Angelo and Dexter Doi were inspired by the designer shopping bags springing up in London, Los Angeles and New York. Created to replace the plastic shopping bag, the eco-friendly concept has been catching on, big time. But could they be done on the cheap? The artists silk-screened simple line graphics of their paintings onto 100-percent canvas bags. Doi's design depicts playful koi in a lily pond, with the message: "liquid vitality" to promote pristine water. D'Angelo's bag is a graphic representation of a tropical garden with an exotic bird and the message: "nurture nature."

Ecolicious bags cost $24 and are sold at Global Village in Kailua, Gallery Haiku in Windward Mall, Hawai'i Moon Gift Shop in Hale'iwa, Blue Buddha in Kaka'ako, Under a Hula Moon in Kailua and Ward Centre and The Place in Ward Warehouse.

SALES & BARGAINS

  • You'll want to prance like a bunny once you use Korres watermelon body scrub ($17), smelling faintly of fresh watermelon with jojoba and bamboo. Enhance your at-home-spa treatment with a delicious and light coating of bitter almond body milk ($15) that won't leave you feeling sticky. From the homeopathic pharmacy of George Korres, these relatively inexpensive organic products are a bargain; the lovely packaging is just a plus. With nothing artificial, you can be relieved knowing that you're not slathering on mineral oils or silicones. Nordstrom, Ala Moana. 589-2060

  • Blame the economy or whatever you like, but Hawai'i is losing its independent boutiques. To the disappointment of many, Hot Mama Maternity is no exception. The closing sale is happening now (closed Sundays) with prices on everything in the store, from baby bedding to lingerie, slashed to 40 percent off. Owner Paige Bradbury must sell everything from merchandise to fixtures; 3435 Wai'alae Ave. (behind Town restaurant); 737-2737.

  • The Salvation Army is one of the cheapest thrift stores by far, with some perfectly fine items at just $1.99. Look for off deals, or other savings not otherwise announced, posted on a dry-erase board in the store. Just give yourself at least an hour and pick one section to really go through it thoroughly. Go to www.salvationarmyhawaii.org for a location near you.

  • With spring under way, there's more daylight hours. Get the coverage you need and look fabulous with a wide-brimmed straw hat (in chocolate and tan) from J. Crew, $34. Don't expect to find black at this establishment, the keeper of the preppy chic with clothing in neutrals and poppy spring colors. Ala Moana Center, new Nordstrom wing; 949 5252.

    MORE THAN A COSMO

When Christian Self makes a cocktail, he's making a drinkable work of art. The specialty cocktails at thirtyninehotel aren't your average pre-made Long Island iced tea mix. It's the real stuff consisting of fresh juices, fruit and even an ingredient that makes your martini iridescent and glittery. Each signature drink is his own recipe — combining fine liquors with fresh produce like berries, basil, cucumber or other exotic tastes.

"We get most of our produce right here in Chinatown," said Self. "Gelareh (Khoie, owner of thirtyninehotel) has a vision of this space to be creative; she really allows me to be free to create with the bar."

Sounds expensive? Order during happy hour, when the specialty and signature cocktails drop to $5; thirtyninehotel Multimedia Space, 599-2552; happy hour is at 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

    A STUDENT AFFAIR

We all strive to be good citizens, whether buying huli-huli chicken tickets or getting a car wash to help a local organization. The senior class of Mid-Pacific Institute grouped together to organize and perform a fundraiser for the American Red Cross in a truly artful way.

Twenty-three artists will showcase their photography, paintings and mixed media as visual entertainment. Plus, 15 students have put together a fashion show with donated clothing by local boutiques Dig Lifestyle, Kicks Hawaii, Alterego and In4mation. Music will be led by a student-composed band.

It all happens 4 p.m. First Friday on April 4 at LOFT, 115 Hotel St.
