Rainbows top Fresno, 2-0, in WAC baseball

Nick Rhodes pitched two-hit ball over 8 2/3 innings to lead Hawaii over Fresno State, 2-0, tonight to earn at least a split of the Western Athletic Conference four-game series.
The Rainbows (9-13 overall, 2-0) shut out the Bulldogs (8-12, 0-2) for the second consecutive night and third in a row at Les Murakami Stadium spanning to the end of last season. UH shutout FSU, 1-0, in last year's home finale.
Rhodes (1-2) walked two and struck out a career-high 11 in 8 2/3 innings in a duel with FSU starter Justin Wilson (1-3), who gave up two runs, five hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. Jayson Kramer retired Erik Wetzel on a grounder to short for his third save.
Hawaii broke the scoreless tie in the fourth with two outs. Jeff Van Doornum walked and Brandon Haislet drilled a 3-1 pitch over the right field fence for his third home run of the season to give UH a 2-0 lead. Kevin Macdonald walked on four pitches, but Landon Hernandez struck out to end the inning.
