No. 16 UH softball splits doubleheader

Jessica Morton pitched a four-hitter and Kate Robinson hit a two-run home run to power the 16th-ranked University of Hawai'i softball team past Texas Tech, 4-1, yesterday in the third day of Chevron Spring Fling Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Morton (3-0) struck out three batters in her complete-game against Texas Tech (6-20).
In the nightcap, North Carolina (23-6) beat UH, 5-1. Robinson hit a solo homer for UH (21-7).
In other games, Texas beat Maine, 7-2, and North Carolina topped Texas Tech, 6-0.
DIVING
UH QUALIFIES TWO MORE
Two more University of Hawai'i divers advanced to NCAA Championships yesterday at the Zone E Qualifier in Oklahoma City, Okla. Magnus Frick won the 1-meter men's final and Emma Friesen finished third in the 3-meter women's final.
The NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships begin Thursday, while the men start March 27.
Frick, a senior who earned an Olympic qualifying spot for Sweden at last month's FINA World Diving Cup, scored a combined 726.00 points to join teammate Mats Wiktorsson in the NCAA Championships. Wiktorsson qualified Thursday with a third-place finish in men's 3-meter. He finished eighth yesterday.
Friesen, a sophomore from Canada who won the WAC 1-meter title, earned a spot in her first NCAA Championships with a score of 599.20. The top three in each event advance.
WATER POLO
WAHINE HOME OPENER
After winning its first three Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches and opening the season 9-3, fifth-ranked Hawai'i will play its home opener today at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine host 17th-ranked UC Santa Barbara at noon today, then play a non-conference match against Cal Baptist at 2 p.m. They take on 14th-ranked Cal State Northridge tomorrow at noon in another MPSF match.
UH's start is its best since 2001, when it opened 11-1 and finished 25-10.
GOLF
TAKARA LEADS BY 1
Neal Takara struggled to a windblown 4-over-par 76 in yesterday's second round, but hung on to first place halfway through the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Pearl Country Club.
Takara's two-day score of 146 is a shot better than Yosuke Takeishi (73) and Travis Toyama (77). Konosuke Nakazato (76) and Chris Igawa (73) share fourth at 148. Takeishi and Igawa shot the low rounds of the day as no one broke par.
The cut came at 14-over 158, with 41 golfers advancing to the weekend. The final round is tomorrow with the leaders expected to finish around 4:30 p.m.
SOFTBALL
UH-HILO SPLITS TWO
Christina Pedroza pitched seven strong innings and Sipahu Lee-Noa drove in two runs as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Notre Dame de Namur, 5-1, yesterday to split a Pacific West Conference women's softball twinbill at UHH field.
Pedroza (3-3) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out three for UHH (5-5, 4-4).
Cierra Keeney fired a four-hitter as the Argonauts (13-14, 5-3) beat the Vulcans, 3-0, in the second game.
BASEBALL
HPU SPLITS TWINBILL
Spencer Omalza drove in three runs and Hawai'i Pacific beat Patten (Calif.), 9-5, yesterday to split a baseball doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park.
Toby Inouye (2-1) earned the win, pitching six innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, while striking out two.
In the first game, James Doss scattered seven hits over six innings as the Lions (2-22) beat HPU, 5-2. Danny Lee led HPU (18-7) with three hits.
