More than 50 students, parents, teachers and residents held signs outside Ka'ahumanu Elementary School this morning to remind drivers to slow down and watch out for pedestrians.
The school is boxed in by well-traveled thoroughfares, including Pensacola, Pi'ikoi and Beretania streets. This is the second sign-waving event for the school.
"Speeding and student safety have been big concerns around our school for many years," said Glenn Miyasato, principal of Ka'ahumanu Elementary. "A large majority of our students walk to school each day, and inattentive or speeding drivers are a real danger."
The sign-waving was organized by AIG Hawai'i's Hot Spots program, which focuses on speeding awareness and pedestrian safety around schools and other sites.
