Advertiser Staff

Traditional Japanese flower arranging will be on display at City Hall later this month.

Hawai'i's top ikebana artists and students will welcome spring with "Splendors of Ikebana," an exhibition of colorful floral arrangements, at Honolulu Hale from March 24 to 28, according to a news release.

Ikebana is a traditional Japanese art of flower arranging that has been practiced for centuries. Through the incorporation of tropical flowers and other indigenous plants, ikebana has become a part of Hawai'i's unique culture.

Ikebana arrangements from seven different schools will be on display: Ikenobo, Kado Sangetsu, MOA Sangetsu, Ohara, Shofu Ryu, Sogetsu and Toin Misho. The exhibition will also include arrangements crafted by children and some arrangements will be more than 10 feet tall.

"Splendors of Ikebana" will feature demonstrations on March 25 and 26 at 10 a.m., with instructors showing traditional and contemporary techniques and styles.

The March 25 demonstration will be led by Lillian Yano and Viva Inouye of the Toin Misho school. The March 26 demonstration will be by Bessie Fooks of the Shofu Ryu.

"Splendors of Ikebana" is presented by the Ikebana International Honolulu Chapter 56, with support from the Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts.

Exhibit hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Viewing is free and open to the public. For more information, call 523-4674.
