State, Hawaii BOE remain at odds over teacher drug testing

The deadline for the implementation of random drug testing of Hawai'i's public school teachers has passed without a plan in place.
The director of the state Department of Human Resources Development said Tuesday that the Lingle administration is prepared to immediately seek "appropriate remedies." But Marie Laderta didn't say what those remedies might be.
The implementation of the testing program is called for in a teachers contract approved last year.
But the Board of Education and the administration of Gov. Linda Lingle are at odds over where the money to run the testing will come from.
BOE chairwoman Donna Ikeda says the Department of Education doesn't have the needed funds, a position disputed by the administration.
