Soccer: Hernandez selected best player at Euro 2008

NYON, Switzerland — Spain's Xavi Hernandez was selected as the best player at the European Championship today.
The 28-year-old midfielder played in five of Spain's six games on its way to winning the title. He scored in the 3-0 semifinal win against Russia.
He was chosen by nine coaches in UEFA's panel of technical experts for the three-week tournament. The selection also took account fans voting online.
He played his 63rd match for Spain on Sunday in its 1-0 victory over Germany in the Euro 2008 final.
