Grants
State grants-in-aid totalling some $925,000 are being released to four nonprofit organizations to help improve educational opportunities, strengthen athletic programs and increase literacy.
According to a news release from Gov. Linda Lingle's office, the organizations receiving grants include:
Hawai'i County Economic Opportunity Council will receive $552,227 split between two grants-in-aid. One grant is for the organization's Dropout Prevention Program, which works with at-risk youths on the Big Island, the news release said.
The other grant is for the group's Language Arts Multicultural Program, which helps low-achieving third- and fourth-graders attending Kapi'olani and Kea'au elementary schools on the Big Island.
Hawai'i High School Athletic Association will receive $150,000. The organization represents 93 public and private high schools statewide. The grant will be used to organize more than 42 state championships in 18 different sports.
Hui Malama Learning Center, which provides educational programs to at-risk youths on Maui, will receive $150,000.
The Read To Me Foundation, which educates parents and caregivers of young children on the benefits of reading aloud, will receive $100,000.
