Homicide police were investigating the death of a man in his 40s or 50s whose body was found yesterday at the Kapi'olani Park archery range.

The case is being described as an unattended death with "suspicious circumstances."

Capt. Richard Robinson, of the Criminal Investigations Division, said the man was seen lying on the ground of the archery range about 8 a.m., and passers-by assumed he was sleeping. But around 11 a.m., a homeless man saw some blood around the man, realized he wasn't breathing and called 911. Robinson said the victim was "possibly homeless," but appeared to be well-groomed and well-dressed.

No missing persons match the description of the man, Robinson said.

Robinson declined to discuss what type of injuries the man had.

Willie Laird, 45, said he saw the man at the range in the morning and didn't think anything of it.

But later in the day, Laird returned, approached the man and saw blood around him.

Laird said the man appeared to have a gash in his neck.

"I saw him laying there and I thought he was sleeping," said Laird, who said he is homeless and frequents the area.

He said he has never seen the man before.

Another man, who said he, too, is homeless and declined to give his name, said the man appeared to have an injury to his head.

Police closed off a portion of the archery range yesterday while they investigated.
